Charlotte resists senate district switch

MIDDLEBURY — The state Senate will soon redraw its district boundaries as is required every 10 years after a federal census, and many Charlotte residents are panning a proposal that their town be absorbed into the Addison County senatorial district.

“I oppose this proposal because moving Charlotte into the Addison County senatorial district dilutes our — i.e., Charlotters’ — rights as voters,” said Charlotte resident Donna Spielman, who initiated a petition opposing the proposed Addison County and Charlotte district.

Editorial: A note to Charlotte residents

We won’t claim a preference in the current redistricting debate that has proposed moving Charlotte into the Addison County senatorial district, but in case math prevails we’d like to introduce you to aspects of the county that may be closer to your values than you may know.

Our rural roots are the most obvious similarities. Dairy farming, open land, small town government and small rural schools are the heart of both areas.

ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County’s senatorial district would swap Brandon for Charlotte in a proposed redistricting plan recently endorsed by the Vermont Apportionment Board (VAB), which had until July 1 to submit final proposals for legislative review.
