Brandon solar array proposal downsized

Posted on October 9, 2017 |
By Lee J. Kahrs

BRANDON — A planned 100-acre solar project on farmland in Brandon is now owned by a different company, and, if it is built, will be 25 percent smaller than originally planned.

Davenport Solar filed a notice of intent to file a petition with the Vermont Public Utility Commission, requesting approval to build the project, which has been downsized to 15-megawatts from the original 20-megawatt plan. A copy of the letter was sent to the state Agency of Natural Resources, the town of Brandon and the Rutland Regional Planning Commission on Sept. 29.

MIDDLEBURY — How does a community position itself to reap the benefits of the new climate economy? That was the core question about 75-100 Middlebury-area residents grappled with Monday afternoon and evening at the kick-off of the Greater Middlebury Climate Economy Initiative — a series of community forums and task forces that will work over the next couple of years to make progress toward a handful of community goals.

The Vermont Council on Rural Development (VCRD), partnering with Green Mountain Power and Efficiency Vermont, sponsored the Middlebury event.

NEW HAVEN — The Vermont Supreme Court has reversed a key permit for a solar array off Route 7 in New Haven and ordered the state utilities regulator to reconsider the matter.

In a unanimous decision issued last Friday, the court ordered the Public Utilities Commission to consider town comments it had deemed to be filed too late and to hold a technical hearing on an interconnection issue in its reconsideration of the solar power project.

New Haven pioneers with energy plan: Among first to try for 'substantial deference'

NEW HAVEN — Perhaps nowhere in Vermont has siting of solar power arrays generated as much controversy as in New Haven.

The town’s sweeping open fields and hosting of a substation that feeds into VELCO’s high-voltage transmission lines (the ones that move energy across towns, states and regions) have made it a magnet for commercial solar power development. Large solar arrays now stand in some fields that once hosted cows and crops.
