ADDISON COUNTY — Democrats will continue what has been a 16-year grip on the two state Senate seats representing Addison County, Huntington and Buel’s Gore. First-time candidate Ruth Hardy and incumbent Sen. Chris Bray easily won election amid heavy voting on Tuesday throughout the county.

Hardy, a former Middlebury school board official and the executive director of Emerge Vermont, was the top vote-getter, garnering 8,875 tallies. Bray, a three-term incumbent, finished second, with 8,723 votes.

ADDISON COUNTY — Recent elections for the two state Senate seats representing Addison County, Huntington and Buel’s Gore have been more like coronations than contests, with incumbent Democrats easily finishing on top.

But an open seat and the participation of two well-known independent candidates in an overall field of six have made this year’s Addison County state Senate race an intriguing competition that has been drawing statewide attention.

Letter to the editor: Hardy committed to equality, inclusion fair play

Like many of us, I have felt both impatient to see Election Day 2018, and anxious about the potential outcomes. Two ideals that I thought were widely valued in our country — democracy and equality — feel threatened by powers far beyond that of my single ballot, which I will cast in a fairly small town, in a very small state. It’s been easy to feel powerless.

Letter to the editor: Ruth Hardy: Thoughtful, experienced and effective

When my husband and I moved to New Haven more than four decades ago, it was common practice to visit regularly with people in the community we didn’t know well. Some of us would be collecting for United Way, some for the Heart Fund, some just keeping the doors of neighborliness open. It seemed as if that way of connecting had gradually disappeared.

Letter to the editor: Hardy has the qualities to be a great state senator

Join me in voting for Ruth Hardy for Vermont State Senator.

I’ve known Ruth for seven years. She is inquisitive, informed, incorruptible, and independent.

Her vision is clear:

•  Inclusiveness

•  Hard work

•  Compassion

•  Knowledge

And you know where she stands:

•  Paid Family leave

Letter to the editor: Bray, Hardy will work hard and find the right answers

It may be a crowded field, but the choice for who to send to the Vermont Senate this November is simple. All you need to do is ask one basic question:

Who do you think will work the hardest for all of us?

Not just for farmers alone, or townsfolk alone, or businesses alone, or teachers alone, or retirees alone, or workers alone. For all of us, together.

Letter to the editor: Hardy committed to the community

Ruth Hardy is a strong candidate for the Vermont Senate.

Ruth’s commitment to community is clear from the roles she has taken in our community over the past 16 years. She is a strong advocate for women leaders in politics as evidenced in her role as the executive director of Emerge. I can think of no other person that would bring the skills, energy and strength to this position. I will be voting for Ruth on Nov. 6.

Letter to the editor: Local Democrats know the issues

Some local candidates figure that “it is the economy, stupid” and that we need to grow the bottom line economy so there will be funds to solve our pressing social and environmental problems. Get government out of the way and/or use it to subsidize positive action and everything will be fine. My take is that approach is the source of most of our problems here in Vermont and across the globe.

Letter to the editor: Hardy's skills are needed in Senate

The Middlebury area town meeting on March 5, 2018, was the first time many of us heard Ruth Hardy present the Unified School District budget. We were impressed with her preparation, understanding of the budgetary process and how the committee she chaired or co-chaired treated all attending the Middlebury member towns. She answered all the questions clearly and directly and to the apparent satisfaction of all attending the Middlebury meeting. Ruth Hardy attended every member town meeting and the budgets were passed by every town.
