By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Dwindling student numbers, a boost in the statewide education property tax rate and a new requirement that school districts pay for their own paraprofessionals are among factors contributing to potentially large property tax increases associated with 2014-2015 budget proposals designed to maintain current programming at Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) elementary schools.

Meet Jim Andrews: Vermont's No. 1 snake man

Posted on September 2, 2013 |
By Candace Page for In This State

Jim Andrews’ boots went splodge, splodge as he trudged along a waterlogged ditch in the mostly pathless Blueberry Hill Wildlife Management Area in the town of Ira on a hot July morning.

His gaze flicked from side to side, alert for the slightest movement. He was already wet to the knees from a thus far unsuccessful brookside hunt for the skittish spring salamander, a slimy amphibian colored the ugly pink of calves’ liver.

“What are we finding?” Andrews called to Cindy Sprague, a volunteer assistant from Huntington.

Fire destroys Nop farm equipment; animals are OK

Posted on August 22, 2013 |
By John S. McCright

NopFarmFire1365.jpg

SALISBURY — Work was returning to normal at the Nop Brothers and Sons Farm in Salisbury this week after a big fire claimed the equipment barn off Route 7 this past Friday night. The new normal, that is, in which the family and their farm workers must take hours of extra time feeding the more than 600 cows they milk each day.

No people or animals were injured in the blaze, which drew firefighters from eight area departments, but the farm lost four critical feed trucks, two skid steers and a tractor that were all used in feeding the cows.
