Lawmakers: Health reform is on track, but new taxes loom

SHOREHAM — “It’s been extraordinarily frustrating,” Rep. Diane Lanpher said of Vermont Health Connect’s track record to date. The Vergennes Democrat gave those remarks during a discussion with other local lawmakers of the state’s health care exchange at a Legislative Breakfast in Shoreham Monday morning.

“What started as really good policy at the federal level could not be rolled out in a way that … met where the policy was going,” Lanpher added.

Shoreham looks to revive historic village ediface

SHOREHAM — The stately, Queen Anne-style brick building on Shoreham’s School Street across from the town green has served many constituencies since being erected by celebrated architect Clinton Smith in 1885. It was first built as a Universalist Church, then became home to the Simonds Lodge of the Masons, before being purchased by the Vermont Conservatory of Music in 2005.

Recently acquired by the town of Shoreham, the building is now being viewed as a community asset that could eventually host some basic public and private functions.

Vermont Gas abandons Phase II pipeline

ADDISON COUNTY — Reaction to the announcement Tuesday that Vermont Gas Systems would abandon its proposal to build a $105 million pipeline from Middlebury to Ticonderoga, N.Y., was met with a mixture of joy and relief from Addison County residents who would have been directly affected.

“I was delighted because we spent more than two years trying to defeat this project,” said Cornwall Selectman Bruce Hiland.

SOUTH BURLINGTON —Vermont Gas Systems Inc. on Tuesday afternoon announced that it will not proceed with the proposal to build Phase 2 of its proposed Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project pipeline — the connection from Middlebury to International Paper’s plant in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

Vt. Gas raises Phase I pipeline cost estimate again

SOUTH BURLINGTON — Vermont Gas Systems on Friday announced that Phase I of the Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project pipeline will cost $33 million more than the company estimated in July, for a total cost of $154 million.

The company also said Phase I will be completed later than projected and asked the Public Service Board to delay its consideration of the second phase of the project, which the board has been reviewing for more than a year.

Saenger, Shoreham board chair, dies after illness

SHOREHAM — Shoreham residents are mourning the loss of their selectboard chairman, Paul Saenger, who died on Oct. 5 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Former Selectwoman Karen Shackett has been appointed to serve the balance of Saenger’s one-year term, which will be up for grabs next March on Town Meeting Day.

Lenox debuts as Shoreham school leader

SHOREHAM — After spending more than a decade teaching music in the classroom, Michael Lenox is ready to play a new tune — as top administrator of Shoreham Elementary School.

Lenox, 37, is beginning what he hopes will be a lengthy tenure as principal of Shoreham Elementary, succeeding James Ross.

“I am very excited about this opportunity,” Lenox said during an interview on Thursday.

Opinion: Straight talk from Cornwall on the proposed pipeline

This is a reply to the “commentary” by Sens. Kevin Mullin and Peg Flory, both Republicans representing Rutland County, on the Vermont Gas Systems/International Paper proposed pipeline project called “Phase 2” that appeared in the July 21 edition of the Addison Independent.

To start let me make three things clear:

•  The Town of Cornwall does not oppose getting natural gas to Rutland.
