ADDISON COUNTY — Nearly $100,000 in grants to two local apple operations announced last week, plus additional grants supporting meat-cutting and composting efforts, aim to help businesses cultivating the local foods market.

Ultimately, the awards through the highly competitive Working Lands Enterprise Fund should make locally grown and processed foods more readily available to Vermont consumers.

This long-standing fundraising event takes place in Shoreham on Saturday, May 11, and celebrates the town’s spirit and beauty. The all-volunteer coordinated race has become a signature spring event for many participants, some coming from as far as Burlington and New York state. What we’ve heard from past racers: “I never knew how beautiful it is here,” and “This is the best post-race food I have ever eaten — and I run a lot of races.”

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Gas Systems officials on Monday asked for public feedback on their proposed “Phase II” pipeline from Middlebury to the International Paper Co. mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

MIDDLEBURY — The Shoreham Zoning Board of Adjustment has given its approval to WhistlePig’s proposal to establish a whiskey distillery at its property off Quiet Valley Road.

MONTPELIER — Organic vegetable farmer and independent state Rep. Will Stevens of Shoreham has always sought to widen his horizons when it comes to agriculture.

And the reason Green believes Bhatka’s argument doesn’t hold water is because the whiskey he would make will hold a lot of water.
