Ways of Seeing: Vt. health care could use a little prevention

Posted on April 16, 2015 |
By Joanna Colwell

Gov. Shumlin’s admission that Vermont would not be achieving single-payer health care in 2017 has disappointed a lot of people. I even received a sympathy card about it, from a good friend in Portland, Ore.! It is sad to imagine that folks all over the United States may have been looking to Vermont for a workable solution to the healthcare crisis, and now we are letting them down due to budgetary woes.

ADDISON AND RUTLAND COUNTIES — As the Vermont Senate Education Committee continues its work on an education funding reform bill this week, small schools are once again under scrutiny as lawmakers consider the proposition that school and district consolidation equals cost savings.

Now, a new report names specific small schools in Addison and Rutland counties as examples of what’s wrong with Vermont’s school districting system.

VERGENNES — Gov. Peter Shumlin on Monday called on lawmakers to help him contain what he called one of the state’s top cost-drivers — education— in an effort to make Vermont more fiscally solvent and attractive to job creators. He also made a pitch for efforts to slow the growth of spending on health care (see related story).

Shumlin made his remarks before a crowd at the Vergennes American Legion hall during a legislative luncheon sponsored by the Bridport Grange and Addison County Farm Bureau.

Opinion: Time for Shumlin to take correct position on pipeline

Posted on February 19, 2015 |
By George Klohck

It is way past the time when Gov. Shumlin should have caught up with a fast growing segment of the public, which realizes now that the so-called Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project has been a “pipe dream” all along. This pipeline never made sense.

Middlebury company designs state building

Posted on February 16, 2015 |
By Addison Independent

MIDDLEBURY — Gov. Peter Shumlin on Jan. 12 cut the ribbon on a new state office building in the heart of St. Albans. Vermont Integrated Architecture (VIA) of Middlebury designed the building as part of a team assembled by development firm ReArch Co. in South Burlington. Replacing a vacant and crumbling brick building on Federal Street, the 45,100-square-foot office building, which will house approximately 168 employees in six departments of the Agency of Human Services, is a large part of the planned revitalization of the city of St. Albans.

Eric Davis: Vermont needs reliable highway funding

Posted on February 5, 2015 |
By Eric L. Davis

On most issues, Gov. Shumlin would not see eye-to-eye with Robert Bentley, the conservative Republican governor of Alabama. Yet, last week Govs. Shumlin and Bentley appeared together before the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. Bentley and Shumlin, speaking on behalf of their colleagues in the National Governors Association, urged Congress to pass a multi-year extension of the federal highway trust fund.

Editorial: Gov. Shumlin's budget sets bold challenges

Posted on January 19, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Gov. Peter Shumlin had little choice in his third-term budget address last Thursday but to propose significant cuts in spending and propose some increases in the state’s revenue stream. The state is facing a $94 million shortfall in fiscal year 2016, and he did what no politician likes to do: propose cuts in spending and tax increases.
