MIDDLEBURY — A Sunday soccer tournament created by a Middlebury teen raised $1,499.50 for Grassroot Soccer, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting the spread of the HIV/AIDS virus in Africa.

Organizer Kelsey Smith, 14, herself an active and accomplished player in the sport, said the first of what she hopes will become an annual “Midd For Kids” event was a success, especially with the late addition of adult teams to the Fucile Field event pushing the tally higher.

ADDISON COUNTY — It’s difficult to evaluate the relative impact of a hard-working scorer and a vital defender on the success of a soccer team.

In the case of the Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ squad this fall the task proved virtually impossible, other than to say that both senior striker Grayson Webb and senior sweeper Zack Ellison played key roles as Coach Mike Corey’s Eagles reached the Division II semifinals.

BRISTOL — The No. 4 Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer team fired on all cylinders — except maybe one — on Tuesday and dispatched visiting No. 13 Otter Valley, 4-1.

The 7-4-4 Eagles possessed the ball constantly, passed efficiently and creatively, won most 50-50 balls, parried the 4-11 Otters effectively when they mounted an attack, and earned a 52-3 advantage in shots at goal.

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ soccer team put the wraps on the Eagles’ best season in years on Friday, but it wasn’t easy.

The Eagles needed overtime to defeat stubborn visiting Middlebury, 1-0, on a long-range bomb by junior Evy Jacobs; finish their regular season at 9-3-2; and, critically, nail down the No. 4 seed for the Division II playoffs — a loss would have dropped them to No. 5.

MIDDLEBURY — One team is improving, and the other, while talented, remains shorthanded.

The first time the two met came on Sept. 13, when the host Vergennes Union High School soccer team — that would be the shorthanded group — broke open a close game in the second half and dealt Middlebury a 4-0 setback.

The second time came on Tuesday, when the improving Tigers held the fort, dodged a couple second-half bullets, and scored early in overtime to avenge that loss, 1-0.

Muffie Harvey 2.JPG

BRANDON — Muffie Harvey is thrilled to be leading the Otter Valley boys’ varsity soccer team, and by all accounts the team is thrilled to have her.

Harvey was named head coach by OV Athletic Director Sumner Erbe earlier this month, and the player and parents had a lot to do with the selection of the Forest Dale resident for the job.

“I was told that they spoke up on my behalf, and I am forever grateful for that,” Harvey said. “I am very grateful to get this position.”
