Discarded pianos prepared for an encore on downtown streets

MIDDLEBURY — Yinglei Zhang has earned her well-earned artistic reputation by using a thin brush to deftly place ink and watercolor strokes on delicate rice paper.

But her latest canvas weighs in at several hundred pounds and will require some burly football players to move it from her studio when it is ready.

MIDDLEBURY — The Jackson Gallery at Town Hall Theater presents “The Blue Swans — Seven Women Artists,” featuring paintings and monoprints by Klara Calitri, Linda Hampton Smith, Molly Hawley, Patricia LeBon Herb, Phoebe Stone, Sarah Wesson and Yinglei Zhang. The exhibit runs March 1-31.

Local elementary students to perform 'King Lear' at THT

MIDDLEBURY — At the second annual production of the Town Hall Theater’s “Shakespeare: It’s Elementary” program 110 students will perform “King Lear.” Performances are on Thursday, March 14, at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Students from three fifth-grade classes at Mary Hogan Elementary and one class each at Leicester Central and Shoreham Elementary have worked for 10 weeks on all elements of text and performance, including reading comprehension, stage fighting and scene craft, among others.

Vermont native acts out his California life on stage

MIDDLEBURY — Some playwrights can spend months in dank libraries or other exotic places researching script material for stage performances.

But Middlebury native Mike Sommers has fashioned a 90-minute, one-man play just by drinking in the sights from the stoop of his house in West Oakland, Calif.

Talented singers learn German for Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro"

MIDDLEBURY –– World-class opera usually comes to Addison County but once a year at the June Opera Company of Middlebury performance. And even then it is not usually opera sung entirely in German.

But over the past six weeks 11 singers have studied, prepared and rehearsed  in German for performances here this weekend of Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro.”

Anderson gives 19th-century opera a sexy new twist

I don’t know Doug Anderson that well but I learned something new about him this past Friday; he’s not afraid to take on a challenge. To stage a production of a complex opera written in the 19th century, about a repressed monk and a promiscuous courtesan from ancient Egypt, and make it appealing to a modern audience, takes vision and some serious nerve.
