All local school spending plans endorsed

Posted on March 3, 2011 |
By John Flowers

ADDISON COUNTY — School directors’ efforts to level-fund or even reduce their 2011-2012 budget proposals paid dividends on Monday and Tuesday, as all education spending plans in the county were endorsed in town meeting voting.

That’s not to say there weren’t some tense moments in some towns. Bridport’s elementary school budget passed by a slim six votes.

But most of the school spending plans passed by comfortable margins, either by voice vote or Australian ballots (see town-by-town results).

By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON — Addison saw three contested races on Tuesday, one in which a long-term incumbent was unseated and two of which revolved around school issues that have been much debated in the town in the past year.

The incumbent who lost his seat was Selectman Kimball Provencher, who has been popular enough to be elected several times since the late 1990s.

New Haven discusses town plan

Posted on March 3, 2011 |
By Andrea Suozzo

NEW HAVEN — On Monday evening at Town Meeting nearly 100 New Haven residents filled the town hall to discuss, among other things, the new town plan.

While the town plan passed by a margin of 274 to 140 by paper ballot the following day, residents at the meeting brought up a number of qualms concerning zoning and development along Route 7 and town officials stressed that the discussions are not over. As the planning commission now turns to the task of rewriting zoning regulations, many of the same concerns and discussions are likely to arise.

ANwSU unification vote on tap

Posted on February 24, 2011 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Residents of the five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union communities will on Tuesday once again decide if ANwSU should unify under one-board governance.

They did so in March 2010 by a 908-539 margin. Big majorities in all five communities backed a 12-member board to own and operate the four ANwSU schools.

But Addison and Vergennes residents petitioned the result, and in May Addison reversed its 197-138 vote in favor with a 191-148 tally against the Unified Union (UU) plan.
