MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Monday got a look at the first draft of a fiscal year 2016 municipal budget that projects a $430,259 increase over this year, which would translate into a 5.6-cent boost in the town’s tax rate.

Board members stressed that the $10,031,448 spending plan under review is just a departure point, and that the final number will likely shrink before being finalized for the voters to decide at the annual town meeting next March.

But officials acknowledged making significant cuts won’t be easy.

College will fund 'net-zero' energy footprint for Middlebury town office

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College has agreed to pay up to $287,550 for additional equipment designed to make the town’s soon-to-be-built municipal building a “net-zero” project, meaning the total amount of energy to be used by the structure on an annual basis will roughly equal the amount of renewable energy created at the site.

Opinion: Board pursuing wrong process

Posted on July 10, 2014 |
By Barbara Tomb

Are you one of the 915 Middlebury residents who voted “yes” on the March town meeting bond vote for the municipal building project?

Would it have influenced your vote at the time if the selectboard (instead of repeatedly assuring voters that the proposed project was compatible with the vision and spirit of the town plan) had revealed instead that altering the town plan to accommodate the project would be part of the process?

Opinion: The democratic process worked

I know I’m not alone in breathing a huge sigh of relief that the vote for the new Middlebury town hall plan is over. Again. And I’m feeling very hopeful that we will move ahead now, as a community, to see these important projects through to completion with a spirit of openness and respect, as we have done before so many times.

Editorial: Middlebury's moment — take time to do projects well

Posted on May 15, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Good for Middlebury. Residents turned out in high numbers for a revote on a municipal bond that confirmed its earlier decision to go forward with the proposed $6.5 million project. That 1,600 people turned out for a revote in mid-May, just 119 fewer than the initial Town Meeting Day vote, is a credit to voter participation and community interest.

Opinion: Middlebury voters need some additional choices

People have lots of ideas about why to reject the current proposal for the town gym and offices when they vote this Tuesday. Many have ideas about what Middlebury could do instead.

Here is mine.

I’m the gardener at the Ilsley Library. The back garden there, though very small, has become a place that welcomes not only people but honeybees, bumblebees, praying mantises, grasshoppers, rabbits, lots of different birds and butterflies, a neighbor cat, and a toad.

A mailing from the Citizens for Middlebury’s Future asks for our thoughts. Here are mine.

You are asking Middlebury residents to give up one of the best financial opportunities the town has had in a long time, if not ever.
