FERRISBURGH — As many on both sides of the issue have said they expected, South Burlington firm Champlain Oil Co.’s controversial Ferrisburgh proposal for a Route 7 gas station, convenience store and fast food restaurant is headed to court.

Champlain Oil (COCO) and Friends of Ferrisburgh for Responsible Growth have both appealed to Environmental Court the Ferrisburgh’s Zoning Board of Adjustment’s Sept. 16 conditional approval of COCO’s planned 9-acre development at the former site of the Ferrisburgh Roadhouse.

UPDATE: Safety concerns prompt Champlain Bridge closure

ADDISON — New York and Vermont transportation officials on Friday afternoon closed the Champlain Bridge because of safety concerns.

The move was taken after experts inspecting the 80-year-old span that links Addison, Vt., with Crown Point, N.Y., found a structural support that worried them.

“It was their decision to close it,” said John Zicconi, Vermont Agency of Transportation Director of Planning, Outreach and Community Affairs. Officials said two of the piers are deficient.

Middlebury rail tunnel under green considered

MIDDLEBURY — Local, state and Vermont Railway officials are exploring the concept of installing a concrete tunnel beneath the railroad bridges at Merchants Row and Main Street in downtown Middlebury.

This new tunnel, officials believe, could provide a perfect fix for the two ailing bridges while allowing enough vertical clearance to accommodate double-stack freight cars that railway officials need to run from Whitehall, N.Y., to Burlington.

“It seems like (a tunnel) is a solution that meets everyone’s needs,” Middlebury Town Manager Bill Finger said on Monday.

Middlebury readies for 'connector' road around municipal building

MIDDLEBURY — People who routinely travel past the Middlebury municipal building at the intersection of College and South Main streets may soon have a clearer view — and one that may not be more pleasing to some people, at least not initially.

Middlebury officials confirmed last week that a second round of tree harvesting will likely occur on the municipal complex grounds sometime in October, this time in an area behind the municipal parking lot that borders the town gym.

Ferrisburgh OKs limited Route 7 development

Posted on September 28, 2009 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh Zoning Board of Adjustment has issued a conditional approval of a Champlain Oil Co. plan for a gas station, convenience store and fast-food restaurant on Route 7. But the approval came without elements of the proposal that COCO officials said were critical to their business plan: diesel fuel pumps and a drive-through window for the restaurant.

The board (ZBA) took that action on Sept. 16 and publicized it last week once COCO acknowledged it had received the ruling in the mail.

Middlebury bridge plan progresses; work hits local restaurant hard

MIDDLEBURY — Until recently, you had to travel down Cross Street or Bakery Lane to get visual confirmation of work on Middlebury’s new in-town bridge project.

But travelers along College Street last month received a rather abrupt signal that big changes are afoot. Seemingly overnight, five large, mature trees that bordered College Street in front of the Middlebury municipal building had suddenly disappeared.

Updated: Crown Point Bridge reduced to one lane; officials cite deteriorating trusses

Posted on July 2, 2009 |
By John S. McCright and Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON — Because of deteriorating steel trusses discovered in a June inspection, New York Department of Transportation officials were poised on Friday to limit traffic to one lane on the Lake Champlain Bridge that links Addison with Crown Point, N.Y.

Signals at either end of the span, a crucial link between Vermont and New York State used by up to 3,600 vehicles a day, will allow eastbound and westbound traffic to take turns crossing Lake Champlain. Work will last at least through the end of August and possibly longer, said NYDOT spokesman Peter Van Keuren.
