BRISTOL — Bristol selectmen learned at a Monday meeting that plans for repair of two key bridges in town are coming together, but that residents should not expect for the spans to be in full working order any time soon.

A highway official explained the state’s multi-year plans for repairing the one-lane bridge on Route 116 that crosses the New Haven River in the southern part of town, and town officials signed an agreement that will lead to repair of the closed bridge at the base of South Street just below the village.

ADDISON — The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has agreed to give Flatiron Construction a 65-day schedule adjustment in which to complete the new Champlain Bridge in view of harsh winter weather and underwater debris that have hampered work progress.

But officials said on Friday they are confident that Flatiron will still be able to get the new bridge completed by the previously targeted deadline of Oct. 9, and the NYSDOT is considering marshalling additional equipment at added expense to help expedite work.

SHOREHAM — The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) officials are targeting President’s Day for the reopening of so-called Bridge No. 2, which spans the Lemon Fair River on Route 74 near the Cornwall-Shoreham town line.

They hope to start building the project during the spring of 2013.

To that end, Vermont Rail has formed a new entity, “Otter Creek Railroad,” to take the lead on a project estimated to cost upwards of $30 million and last two construction seasons.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday OK’d a 2011 Town Meeting Day warning that includes a request for a 20-year, $3 million bond issue to take care 17 different road improvement projects that might otherwise linger on the drawing board.

Officials stressed they would not seek to repay the bond issue through a property tax increase. Rather, they are proposing to pay down the bond debt with funds Middlebury already budgets annually for capital improvements.
