Commodore track and field team tunes up for state meet

NORTHFIELD — Another first-place finish for senior hurdler Jon Welch highlighted the efforts of a small contingent from the Vergennes Union High School indoor track and field team on Saturday at Norwich University.

Welch won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.24, and was joined in scoring points in the event by teammate Austin Beamish, who finished sixth in 9.24.

VUHS establishing new specific diploma requirements

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union High School is moving toward a system that will require students to demonstrate mastery of a series of skills, known as “Performance Based Graduation Requirements,” in order to earn a diploma.

Forum on two-tiered VUHS bond vote set

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union residents on Thursday, Jan. 31, will have a chance to ask Vergennes Union High School board members about the upcoming two-tiered vote on whether to fund upgrades the VUHS building and grounds.

The board will hold a 7 p.m. forum at VUHS on that Thursday to present information and allow for questions on the two bonds that residents will decide the fate of on Feb. 5. There will be a walk through of the building areas to be renovated and/or upgraded at 6 p.m.

Eagles ride early surge at VUHS: Mt. Abe girls up record to 10-1

VERGENNES — Tuesday’s high school girls’ basketball game between visiting Mount Abraham and host Vergennes was essentially over after the first quarter, during which the Eagles showed why they are once again Division II title contenders.

In that quarter the 10-1 Eagles took a 24-2 lead with crisp offense and tough fullcourt and halfcourt defense that translated into transition baskets.

The 1-9 Commodores kept working and cut the lead to 15 at the half, but could not stop Mount Abe from walking off with a 50-17 victory.

VUHS, Mount Abe track and field athletes compete at UVM

BURLINGTON — Members of the Vergennes Union High School indoor track team won three events on Saturday at the University of Vermont while placing in seven others.

The strong showing allowed the Commodore boys’ team to finish fifth out of 18 teams competing, while the Commodore girls took 10th out of 22 squads.

Commodore boys' basketball team pulls away from Eagles

VERGENNES — The visiting Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ basketball team took a first-quarter lead at Vergennes on Tuesday and hung close to the undefeated Commodores through early in the second half, but ultimately VUHS pulled away for an 87-48 win.

When Mount Abe junior Sawyer Kamman (a team-high 16 points) sank a three-pointer to open the second half, the 1-7 Eagles trailed by just 44-32 in front of the typically big crowd for this rivalry game.

ADDISON COUNTY — Last week in local high school boys’ basketball play, Vergennes won twice to remain unbeaten, Fair Haven defeated both Otter Valley and Middlebury at home to remain undefeated, and Mount Abraham and OV dropped home contests.

Area wrestling teams find some success at Hubie Wagner Tourney

MIDDLEBURY — No wrestler from one of the four local high school programs stood on the top of a podium when last week’s annual Hubie Wagner Invitational Tournament concluded in the Middlebury gym, but each of the four teams had something to be happy about.

The host Tigers had the best performance, tying for sixth with Champlain Valley among the 18 programs competing on Dec. 28 and trailing only one Vermont team, the combined Bellow Falls-Hartford squad.

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school boys’ basketball action on Tuesday, Vergennes won big at home to remain unbeaten, Mount Abraham worked overtime to defeat visiting Otter Valley, and Middlebury suffered not only its first loss, but also a key injury.

Grant supports high school neuroscience clubs

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience has announces that Lisa Bernardin, the coordinator of the Vermont Brain Bee, has received a “Small and Inspiring” grant from the Vermont Community Foundation (VCF). Through this program, VCF aims to foster the spark and hope that keeps Vermonters healthy and happy by funding and supporting projects in every town in Vermont where a small grant can make a big difference.
