Ripton, Lincoln ready for winter

RIPTON — Residents in the climes of Ripton and Lincoln have not had to touch their thermostats for several months, but they are already beginning to think about the cold winter ahead — and particularly about their neighbors who might not have the resources to stay warm.

Vergennes slammed by severe rainstorm

VERGENNES — Heavy rains, lightning and thunder struck most of Addison County last Wednesday afternoon, but no storm slammed any site as hard as the one that targeted Vergennes.

According to city public works head Jim Larrow, starting at around 4 p.m. on May 16 two-and-a-half inches of rain fell in 45 minutes, overwhelming many city storm drains and culverts as well as stormwater drainage systems in many Vergennes subdivisions.

Dry weather lets farmers get in fields

ADDISON COUNTY — The warm, dry weather this spring is unusual, but to some farmers it’s come as a welcome change from last year.

According to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, precipitation totals at the Burlington weather station are running about 3.3 inches below average, at just over 7 inches since Jan. 1. Vermont also saw record high temperatures in March. With little precipitation and very little snowmelt, the fields and forests are unusually dry.

Low snowfall, warm temps make history

ADDISON COUNTY — Once upon a time, March came in like a lion and went out like a lamb, but not this year. This past March came in like a lamb and went out like a hot tamale, throwing local residents, businesses and some wildlife for a loop. And the string of 70- and 80-degree days late in March followed an unusually warm and dry winter.

How to sum up the winter of 2011-2012?

“Unprecedented.”

Beware of more ticks this summer

ADDISON COUNTY — Like many Addison County residents, Peter Grant thought he would take advantage of the recent mid-March, warm-weather spell by taking a walk behind his Bristol property off Route 116.

But roughly 600 feet down a rustic trail, Grant discovered he was taking along some unwanted guests.

“I saw some little black spots on my pants, and they were moving,” Grant said.

Sugarmakers tap in early

ADDISON COUNTY — In his 34 years of maple sugaring, Starksboro’s Dave Folino has encountered few winters like this one. With some local spotters noting temperatures soaring eight degrees above average last month and more than six degrees above average in December, the sap has been flowing steadily.

“It’s not really a winter,” said Folino. “It’s pretty much a perpetual sugar season.”

Mild weather hurts local businesses

MIDDLEBURY — Mother Nature has delivered Vermont an unseasonably tepid winter so far, leading business owners who depend on snow-related sales looking to the skies for signs of the white stuff.

“It’s been crushing for us,” said Mike Hussey, director of the Carroll and Jane Rikert Nordic Ski Center in Ripton. “Everybody is hungry to ski and just waiting for the snow.”

Weather: Wet, wild 2011 finished on warm note

ADDISON COUNTY — Rain, snow, sleet, freezing rain and even some hail pummeled Addison County residents this past year.

“We had a lot of extremes, mostly in precipitation,” said Nathan Foster, the observing program leader for the National Weather Service’s (NWS) Burlington office. “It was one of our wettest years on record for Vermont.”
