Bad weather of all sorts drives apple count down

ADDISON COUNTY — As fall rolls in, it’s looking like a mixed bag for area apple orchards. In a growing season that included a wet spring, extensive flooding, hailstorms and a tropical storm, orchards took a hit.

But those in the industry said it could have been worse.

“Despite some of the losses we’re looking at, it’s a relatively good crop,” said Steve Justis, executive director of the Vermont Tree Fruit Growers Association.

Floods close some local roads

ADDISON COUNTY — Officials at the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) on Monday afternoon were continuing to work toward full recovery of the roadways around Addison County and Vermont that were flooded on Sunday as the remnants of Hurricane Irene swept through Vermont.

In Addison County the flooding appears to have been less severe than in other parts of the Vermont. According to Chris Cole, VTrans Director of Policy, Planning and Intermodal Development, the southern counties Bennington and Windham were hit especially hard.

Heat wave pushes power grid to the limit

VERMONT — Soaring temperatures swept across New England last week scorching Addison County, Vermont and the entire six-state region.

While thermometers were reporting temperatures way above normal, other meters also gave unusually high readings: Electricity demand in the region was just shy of record.
