Deluge of snow putting strain on area road budgets

ADDISON COUNTY — This winter’s relentless snowfall has not only strained residents’ patience, but it has also stretched town budgets and worn out highway workers, according to at least a small sample of local municipal officials and road foremen.

Not only have expenses for materials like sand and salt gone up, but labor costs have also risen as road crews have worked long hours trying to keep roads and sidewalks clear. Meanwhile repair bills have also mounted as equipment has been pushed to the limit.

ADDISON COUNTY — The blizzard that dumped as much as two feet of snow on Addison County early this week blindsided many Vermonters in the hopeful midst of an early spring reverie, leaving many locals floundering for help in a sea of white.

Winter to go down in history

ADDISON COUNTY — According to data from the Burlington office of the National Weather Service, up to two feet of snow fell on Addison County in the storm earlier this week, far more than six to 10 inches forecasters had initially expected.

NWS monitors called in amounts that ranged from 21.7 inches in South Lincoln to 24 inches in both Bridport and the north end of Lincoln.

Elsewhere in the county, reporters to the NWS measured 23.8 inches in Salisbury, 23 in Salisbury, and 22 in Cornwall.

Wet weather hurting Vermont's dairy farmers

ADDISON COUNTY — Many people have been glad to see a break in the rain that has seemed almost constant over the last month. But for those who till the soils and milk cows the wet weather has combined with depressed milk prices and high fuel costs to create what some are referring to as a perfect storm for swamping Vermont’s dairy industry.

Gov. James Douglas this week called for federal disaster assistance to aid dairy farmers and said he would convene a special dairy summit by the end of the month to see what more could be done.
