Biologist: Humans are cause of bear problems

MIDDLEBURY — Bears aren’t the problem — you are.

This was the gist of the presentation given Wednesday evening by Forrest Hammond, a bear biologist for Vermont Fish & Wildlife, to a crowd of locals concerned by the spate of recent bear sightings around the area. About 70 people crowded the Middlebury Town Offices for the talk, which covered the biology and behavior of the Eastern black bears that call Addison County home — and what we can do to mitigate their encroachment into our backyards.

Citizen scientists needed to monitor Vermont's turkey broods

MONTPELIER — Wild turkeys are found throughout most of Vermont. To help make sure that the flocks are healthy and well managed, their reproductive success is monitored annually by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department with help from “citizen scientists” who report the number and size of turkey families they see during August.

Cliffs clear to hike, climb again Aug. 1

MONTPELIER — Hikers and rock climbers can return to Vermont cliffs starting Wednesday, Aug. 1, now that peregrine falcon nesting season has ended. The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department has confirmed that all the young falcons have learned to fly and will not be disturbed by human presence on the cliffs.

In Addison County, nesting sites now open include Deer Leap in Bristol, Mt. Horrid at the top of the Brandon Gap and Snake Mountain in Weybridge/Addison.

Dead Creek waterfowl lottery deadline nearing

ESSEX JUNCTION — Applications are available for controlled waterfowl hunting permits to be used at Mud Creek in Alburgh and Dead Creek in Addison, both Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department wildlife management areas.

The applications may be downloaded from Fish & Wildlife’s website vtfishandwildlife.gov.  Printed applications are available at Vermont Fish & Wildlife offices in Montpelier, Essex Junction, Addison, Barre, St. Johnsbury, Springfield, and Rutland.

The Outside Story: Male mallards aren't as nice as they look

Robert McCloskey’s “Make Way for Ducklings” is one of my favorite childhood books. I loved the way Mr. and Mrs. Mallard interacted, their seemingly endless search for the perfect nesting place, the description of classic Boston neighborhoods, and the whimsical names of their eight ducklings.

Not until I started reading the story to my own children, several years ago now, did I notice Mr. Mallard ditches Mrs. Mallard after the ducklings hatch, leaving her to tend to eight kids on her own, amid the dangers of snapping turtles and Boston traffic.

Bobcat caught on game camera

BRANDON — The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department last month released images of a bobcat that was caught in a series of photos on a game camera set up under a bridge in Brandon. The cameras are put out as part of a collaborative partnership between Vermont Fish & Wildlife, The Nature Conservancy, and VTrans to better understand wildlife movement around road crossing structures.
