Guest editorial: Germany is ranked first, U.S. 193rd in trade imbalance

Posted on August 20, 2014 |
By Harold Meyerson

As long as U.S. intelligence agencies are hell-bent on spying on Germany, why can’t they turn up some truly useful secrets? For instance, how to have an economy that bolsters a nation’s power and fosters a vibrant middle class.

Editorial: It's more than the money

Posted on August 18, 2014 |
By Christopher Flavelle

To judge by this summer’s banner policy proposals, the most important question for higher-education reform right now is giving students easier access to loans. But evidence from Canada suggests those changes won’t address the greater need: Getting more kids from poor families into college, the key to moving up in an increasingly unequal society.

Editorial: Doug Racine's ouster and the lessons learned

Posted on August 14, 2014 |
By Emerson Lynn

When the head of a state agency is fired, the reasons for the dismissal should be required reading for other agency heads and potential successors. That is particularly true in the case of ousted Agency of Human Services Secretary Doug Racine.

Guest Editorial: The 'new normal' or is it Vermont's denial?

Posted on August 11, 2014 |
By Emerson Lynn

It’s being called the new normal. Our unemployment rate is near full employment, the economy, while not robust, still trudges forward, real estate prices are edging upward — but the state’s budget is forever in the red.

We can’t seem to get ahead.

The next budget year continues the trend. The Shumlin administration has asked each of its agencies to submit a budget that reflects a 4 percent cut — totaling roughly $31 million.

Why is the market reacting the way it is? How could the business respond in beneficial ways? How can the business make its products better to meet public demand, or expand in directions not previously considered? Hypotheticals are posed and examined.

Communities would benefit by doing the same.

Vermont is at it again: angling to be a national leader on yet another public policy issue. This time it’s the effort to reduce consumption of sugar-laden beverages.

The angle? Pass a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages.

Vermont touts two scenic drives in the state: the dramatic Smugglers’ Notch that goes between Stowe and Jeffersonville featuring a steep, single-lane pitch through large rocky slabs and boulders near the top, and the bucolic Robert Frost Memorial Drive that features a 16-mile section of Route 125 over the Middlebury Gap from East Middlebury to Hancock.

Editorial: Parents to students — want to make an extra $500,000

Posted on July 28, 2014 |

In Vermont, it’s well known that our high school graduation rate is one of the highest in the country, while we rank toward the bottom among states in sending graduating seniors to higher education. Roughly 40 percent of high school graduates in Vermont do not go on to post-secondary education.

Part of the reason is money: A college-education is expensive and Vermont ranks among the least generous of states to subsidize those expenses for in-state students.

Editorial: A fine line to straddle in a venue that's quick to judge

A new political action committee, or PAC, announced this week by Reps. Paul Ralston, D-Middlebury, and Heidi Scheuermann, R-Stowe, has set out on the noble mission of being a non-partisan supporter of candidates running for election in Vermont. The criteria for support hinge on one primary issue: putting the state’s economy front and center.
