Editorial: What's to be gained in upgrading wetland's status

Posted on June 24, 2019 |
By Angelo Lynn

The petition to reclassify the 15,500-acre Otter Creek Wetland Complex from a Class II status to Class I poses some interesting questions as to what is to be gained, but at the very least the months of discussion that is likely to ensue will teach Addison County residents about the invaluable functions and “irreplaceable values” of what is the state’s largest wetland.

Guest editorial: Here's how to create a viable economic development strategy

Posted on June 19, 2019 |
By Bill Schubart

Vermont’s economic development strategy needs coordination — and perhaps centralization

Vermont has no long-term, well-articulated economic development strategy, nor the funding capacity to execute one.

It’s not that we don’t spend money on economic development. There are many earnest people working hard to generate economic activity in Vermont, although we often confuse economic and community development; a Greensboro Pride Parade or town green replanting is not “economic development.”

Editorial: Everyone wants family leave, but at what cost?

Posted on June 17, 2019 |
By Angelo Lynn

The push for a federal family leave benefit has been building ever since the two-income family became the norm two, maybe three decades ago, and single mothers became a larger part of the nation’s demographic. And it makes good sense. With both parents working full-time jobs, what are the options when a child, or aging family member, is sick for a prolonged period?

The obvious solution is that one parent or the other has to get time off work to care for that family member.

Editorial: Join us to discuss pros, cons of raising the minimum wage

Posted on June 13, 2019 |
By Angelo Lynn

Editor’s note: This is a continuing discussion of the minimum wage issue.

As different cities and states across the country experiment with raising the minimum wage to different heights, Seattle has been heralded as “a national guinea pig for the policy since 2014,” according to a report in CNN, when the city voted in 2014 to gradually raise its minimum wage from $9.47 to $15.45 for large employers by 2018 and to $16 per hour in 2019.

Editorial: Kudos to Neighbors Together

Posted on June 13, 2019 |
By Angelo Lynn

That the town of Middlebury will receive a $228,750 state grant to promote and market the town’s business community during the rail bridges road construction work over the next two years is no small deal. Much work went into preparation of that grant proposal, submitted by Neighbors Together, which culminated in a very detailed and comprehensive marketing plan.

Guest editorial: Increased childcare funding yields social, economic gains

Posted on June 10, 2019 |
By Walter Frame

Of all the competing funding priorities debated this legislative session in Montpelier, increased investments in child care rose to the top for good reason. The $7.4 million child care package included in the budget is one of the biggest investments the Capitol made this year. It is also one that could yield incredible economic and social returns for Vermont.

Editorial: Did Dems blow it? Think you could do better?

Posted on June 6, 2019 |
By Angelo Lynn

As news of Vermont’s legislative session wraps up, the overall reaction to the session was that the Democrats and Progressives fell short of accomplishing several key measures — namely, implementing retail sales for marijuana, taking the minimum wage to $15 by 2024, passing a favorable family leave bill, finding a way forward on Act 46 (school consolidation and governance), as well as numerous environmental issues.

Editorial: A superior idea, but do we have the will to adopt universal free meals?

Posted on June 3, 2019 |
By Angelo Lynn

The idea of “universal free meals” for all school students during the academic school year is so obviously superior to what this country has done for a century or more, one wonders how we ever thought that singling out a select group of kids for a subsidized meal was a good idea.

Guest editorial: 'No treason. Just dumb lies'

Posted on May 30, 2019 |
By James Comey

Editor’s note: James Comey is a former director of the FBI and a former deputy attorney general. He wrote this op-ed, which first appeared in the Washington Post, on May 28, denying that the FBI had a conspiracy to defeat Trump before the election (a claim Trump has recently been making.)

Editorial: Few clues with digital news

Posted on May 27, 2019 |
By Angelo Lynn

Here’s a throw-away editorial we shouldn’t have to write, except it points out some of the failings of reading news in a digital format. One such problem is that readers have to know a lot to judge the importance of news.
