Editorial: Does racial diversity panel follow common sense? No

Posted on April 2, 2018 |
By Emerson Lynn

The Vermont Senate recently passed legislation intended to “promote racial justice reform throughout the state by mitigating systemic racism in all systems of state government and crating a culture of inclusiveness.”

The legislation, S.281, would create a cabinet level position — the chief civil rights officer — and would be appointed by a five-person civil rights advisory panel. The position would be independent of the governor’s office.

Editorial: A priceless civics lesson

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

A common lament among older generations (me included) is that schools these days don’t teach civics like they used to.

Editorial: You can't make this stuff up

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

No doubt our current president is a political lightning rod for liberals and moderates like no other Republican we have seen in recent times (President Nixon was a close second, but that’s been 48 years). But it’s one thing to be viscerally abhorrent to political opponents; it’s quite another to be harshly criticized by members of your own political party. When that’s the case, the warning signs of a president who poses a threat to our society are magnified.

Here, then, are a few comments from some unlikely sources:

Editorial: Marches protest gun violence, but why now?

Posted on March 26, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

In Middlebury, about 400 protesters for stricter gun control legislation, joined another 2,500 protesters in Montpelier, and hundreds of thousands of protesters in Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago and more than 800 other places around the country and world in mass marches against gun violence.

It’s a movement started by students and led by students around the country — a grassroots protest that has turned into one of the largest political movements the country has seen since the Vietnam War protests of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Editorial: A stark visual to dairy's reality

Posted on March 22, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

The decline in the number of dairy farms in Vermont has been steady for the past 70 years, even as milk output increases and the economic contribution to the state remains significant. Perhaps because dairy remains an economic powerhouse in the farm sector, we Vermonters aren’t as concerned as we might be to the problems dairy farmers are facing today.

Editorial: Uphill battle to come on gun-control bill

Posted on March 22, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

Vermont’s House of Representatives could vote on a significant gun-control bill as early as this Friday. That prospect follows narrow passage of S.55 by the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. A less restrictive version of the bill had passed the Senate earlier this month, which means that if S.55 passes the full House, some version of the bill would likely be approved by the full Legislature and sent to Republican Gov. Phil Scott for his signature this session.

Editorial: Gun control facts vs fiction

Posted on March 19, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

As the debate over gun control laws in Vermont heat up, let’s separate some facts from fiction.

• First, much of the debate about the Second Amendment is because of its relatively vague wording. The Second Amendment reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Editorial: With gun control, it's power politics, more than reason, that wins

Posted on March 15, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

The lessons to be learned from the 3,000 student-led marches around the country this Wednesday protesting gun violence are many, but can be boiled down to a single challenge: Will today’s angst and motivation for change among students and gun-control advocates outlast the forces that champion gun rights to the extreme degree this country allows?

Don’t be too sure change is coming. If you are, you’re likely to be disappointed.

Editorial: Condos says, 'Too much at stake'

Posted on March 15, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

Early this week, Vermont’s Secretary of State Jim Condos sent out an alarm to patriots everywhere, and specifically our congressional delegation, that a provision in a recent U.S. House bill had included a provision to allow Secret Service agents to enter polling locations at the direction of the president. The provision, Condos wrote, was included in language in House bill 2825, section 4012, which reauthorizes the federal Department of Homeland Security.

Editorial: State leaders off-base trying to change school finance now

Posted on March 12, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

School budgets across the state had a remarkable success rate this Town Meeting. Of 142 school districts facing budget votes on Town Meeting Day, 135 budgets were approved, two votes had yet to be tabulated as of mid-Wednesday, and only five were defeated. That 96 percent approval rate is one of the highest in recent times, making one question the wisdom of the Democratically controlled Legislature’s push for school finance reform.
