Bikers promote efficient energy sources

VERGENNES — Efforts to increase awareness of climate change have taken to the open road. A group of young environmentalists are biking through the state, acting as partners with the organization Climate Summer, a program aimed at connecting with local leaders to address issues pertaining to efficient energy sources.

Climate Summer is a internship program for college-age students run by Better Future Project, a nonprofit organization founded in January 2011 that promotes leadership development and heads initiatives in environmental issues.

Middlebury officials award road contract

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday unanimously supported two new investments in the ongoing fire station improvement projects to make the two buildings even more durable for the future.

First, the board OK’d a proposal to equip station one on Seymour Street and station two in East Middlebury with an epoxy floor treatment that will make the surface more durable and less susceptible to slips for firefighters moving in haste while responding to a call.

Middlebury Center focused on primary care

MIDDLEBURY –– Planned Parenthood is a national reproductive health care provider, which is divided into regional affiliates. The Middlebury Health Center is one of 10 sites that comprise Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE).

Planned Parenthood provides a variety of reproductive health services to men and women, explained Jill Krowinski, director of Vermont public affairs for PPNNE.

Owners give Vergennes landmark a makeover

VERGENNES — Early this spring, the original plan for one of the most prominent pieces of the Vergennes skyline called for a paint job.

That’s when Tim and Liz Ryan, owners of the Ryan Block, a Main Street landmark that has borne their family name since a previous generation bought the 172-year-old building in 1965, asked Cornwall’s Jonathan Hescock for cosmetic work on the cupola atop their three-story structure.

VERGENNES — A local man is hoping to close soon on a deal to acquire the former Kennedy Brothers Marketplace at 11 North Main St. in Vergennes, a 41,724-square-foot complex that would house a new grocery store while maintaining its current tenants and recruiting others.

Area crops hold up in summer heat

ADDISON COUNTY — As farmers across the nation hope for rain to end the worst drought since 1956, Addison County farmers are counting their blessings.

“So far it’s been a pretty good growing season, other than extreme heat and a little on the dry side,” said Hank Bissell of Lewis Creek Farm in Starksboro.

For Bissell, this year has prompted him to use his irrigation system more than usual due to prolonged stretches of warm weather with no rain, but he said vegetable yields have been good compared to those in last year’s wet weather.

Celebrated film on autism to be shown at Ilsley

MIDDLEBURY — A little piece of Hollywood is coming to Ilsley Public Library in Middlebury.

On July 26 at 6 p.m., Academy Award-nominated film producer Douglas Biklen will be appearing alongside the documentary film “Wretches and Jabberers.” The film follows two Vermonters living with autism as they travel to advocate for disability rights. This film is among others, including the Academy Award-nominated “Autism is a World,” that Biklen has produced on the topic of autism awareness.

Bristol police given new tool to fight crime in park
