Economic pressures push ambulance service to expand

MIDDLEBURY — Three years after moving into its new, 11,860-square-foot headquarters off South Street, the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association (MVAA) is now ready to expand its billing, dispatching and education outreach services. A major goal is to generate more revenues to stay financially solvent in the face of a still-tough economy and health care reform efforts that could present new budget challenges for all of Vermont’s emergency response organizations.

Keewaydin seeking ecology camp funds

SALISBURY — Boosters of the Keewaydin Environmental Education Center (KEEC) have begun raising money in an effort to maximize the number of area students able to attend the camp each year.

Based in Salisbury along Lake Dunmore, KEEC “offers hands-on, experiential learning” in environmental studies. Drawing from the natural surroundings, KEEC leaders incorporate history, science, math, language arts, geology and physical education into a series of investigations that integrate with the school curriculums.

Sheldon Museum educates the public on dairy history

Orb Weaver Farm joins Vermont Land Trust

MONKTON — Marjorie Susman and Marian Pollack, owners of Orb Weaver Farm, are legends in the Vermont cheese world. Soon after buying their first Jerseys in 1981, they quickly realized they needed to do something different to survive in the dairy business. Before long, they decided to make cheese and they haven’t looked back.

Fifteen generations of cows later, their farmhouse cheeses continually win national and international awards.

Susman and Pollack recently conserved 102 acres of their Monkton farm with the Vermont Land Trust.

Blue Spruce Farm's 100kW wind turbine now online

BRIDPORT — As dairy farms attempt to maximize their assets, one dairy in Addison County has found a way to put some new “energy” into its business.

Blue Spruce Farm in Bridport, the first dairy farm in Vermont to put power from cow manure on the electric grid, is now capturing energy from the wind as well. Green Mountain Power has installed a Vermont-built Northern Power 100 kilowatt wind turbine at the Route 22A spread run by the Audet family.

Habitat for Humanity builds first of four homes in Cornwall

CORNWALL — Angela McCluskey had grown tired of seeing her son Jonathan turn in for the night on the living room couch in their small apartment while she and her daughter Caitlin got to sleep in beds.

So McCluskey took what she believed was a long shot: She applied to become the owner of one of four new Habitat for Humanity homes to be built within a 13-acre subdivision off Cornwall’s Delong Road.

Police, public works costs drive $1.83 million city budget draft

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council last week got its first look at a draft 2013-2014 city budget, one that City Manager Mel Hawley prepared and said could mean the second increase since 2008 in the tax rate devoted solely to paying for municipal services.

Aldermen will make the final decision on the budget and the municipal portion of the tax rate by the end of June. That portion of the tax rate does not support school spending.

Teacher who founded Starksboro art program is retiring

STARKSBORO — After more than two decades at Robinson Elementary School, art teacher Vera Ryersbach is retiring this month. She leaves quite a legacy behind — when Ryersbach came on board as a volunteer in 1989, Robinson was the last school in the Addison Northeast district that did not have an art teacher.
