VERGENNES — It was only a couple of months ago that Dave Huntley was jobless, homeless and living out of his car.

“I’d been working on a farm in Barton,” Huntley said during a recent interview at the John W. Graham Emergency Shelter in Vergennes, where he eventually landed. “There weren’t too many farm jobs out there.”

But thanks to the efforts of the shelter, other area nonprofits and a Vergennes landlord, Huntley is a now a rent-paying tenant at a local residence.

Local community members and businesses donated gifts for the toy drive, which also featured the participation of the Addison County Sheriff’s Department, Vergennes Police Department and Vermont State Police. The gifts went to children who otherwise would have not found much under the tree on Dec. 25.

MIDDLEBURY — Developers of the South Ridge neighborhood off Middle Road in Middlebury are seeking permission to install a 500-kilowatt solar farm on a 3.3-acre parcel near the Lodge at Otter Creek.

The project, if OK’d by state utility regulators, is expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 100 homes while remaining relatively inconspicuous due to the topography and surroundings of the three-acre parcel on which it would be sited.

Kennedy Brothers Marketplace sold in family deal

Posted on January 3, 2013 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The Kennedy Brothers business, including the landmark 11 North Main St. building in Vergennes, changed hands in a late-December family deal that will allow its long-time principal owner to retire.

The transaction also means the 41,724-square-foot Kennedy Brothers Marketplace building will no longer be for sale for $1.2 million, as it has been in recent years; its new owners have taken it off the market and will continue to look for tenants.

MIDDLEBURY — Members of the Middlebury selectboard last month signed a letter of support for Vermont Gas Systems’ proposal to extend its natural gas pipeline from Chittenden County to Middlebury and Vergennes.

The $72 million project, if approved by the Vermont Public Service Board and built out as planned by 2015, would save the approximately 2,100 eligible residential and business customers in Middlebury a combined total of $5 million per year compared to what they are currently paying for fuel oil, according to the company.
