Refurbished bridge in Lincoln reopens

LINCOLN — Town Highway 1 Bridge 19 located on East River Road in Lincoln opened to all traffic this past Thursday evening at 6:20 p.m. — on schedule. The bridge closed on July 8 to all traffic and was scheduled to remain closed until Aug. 27.

Mt. Abe taps New York youth advocate for vice principal

BRISTOL — Come Tuesday, Sept. 1, newly hired assistant principal David Ford should be walking the halls of Mount Abraham Union High School.

Ford, who was offered the job after the Mount Abe board approved his hiring on Aug. 18, will join Interim Principal Carol Fenimore and Assistant Principal Ellen Repstad on the school’s three-person administrative team. Fenimore began her tenure July 1; Ellen Repstad, formerly a long-time literacy instructor at Mount Abe, is now in her fourth year as assistant principal.

$450,000 in loans aim to stimulate local economy

ADDISON COUNTY — Eight area businesses needing cash for new equipment, inventory and/or workers to take their respective operations to the next level are getting some help from the Addison County Economic Development Corp. The ACEDC has approved a total of $450,000 in loans to the firms, which are located in Vergennes, Bridport, Bristol and Middlebury.

Robin Scheu, executive director of the ACEDC, is pleased to see great demand for the ACEDC loans.

State police say man assaulted his female companion

BRISTOL — A South Burlington man pleaded innocent on Aug. 26 in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, to five separate misdemeanor charges in connection with an alleged domestic assault at the Green Mountain Family Campground in Bristol on Aug. 25.

ADDISON COUNTY — The Middlebury Garden Club has announced the winners of its annual Roadside Attractions Awards. These accolades recognize gardens cultivated by people around the county who are not members of the club.

Kelly Brush Ride to mark its 10th year, registration deadline is Sept. 9

MIDDLEBURY — The Kelly Brush Century Ride will roll out of Middlebury on Sept. 12, celebrating 10 years of cyclists riding to empower those living with paralysis through sport and recreation and to improve ski racing safety.

Named “Best Century Ride in Vermont” by Vermont Sports magazine, last year’s event drew more than 700 riders. The ride is also the region’s largest for adaptive athletes using handcycles, with dozens of participants taking part annually.

Presentation at Folklife Center to explore daughter of slaves

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Folklife Center in Middlebury presents “From Life in West Africa, to Enslavement in Virginia, to Freedom in Vermont: an African American Saga,” a multimedia presentation by Dr. Jane Beck, on Thursday, Sept. 10, from 6-8 p.m.

This free event celebrates the publication of Beck’s book “Daisy Turner’s Kin: An African American Family Saga.” Refreshments and informal conversation with the author will be followed by her presentation, discussion and book signing.

Middlebury puts brakes on downtown rail bridges project

New Haven wary of yet another transmission line proposal

NEW HAVEN — A standing-room-only crowd packed the meeting room at the New Haven town offices Monday night to hear a proposal for a renewable-energy transmission line project that would bring 400 megawatts of wind power and hydropower from upstate New York into the New England grid at the Vermont Electric Power Co. (VELCO) substation in New Haven.

While some welcomed the potentially huge property tax payments the project would bring to New Haven, others worried that it would have an undue adverse impact on the rural landscape.
