NOTE: This story has been updated to correct the date of the VUHS board meeting.

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board hopes to hear from the public on Monday, July 9, its opinions on a bond that could be floated as soon as November and might approach $5 million if all elements now being discussed are included.

In the past six weeks, according to Addison Northwest Supervisory Union business manager Kathy Cannon, school officials have begun leaning toward asking for two elements that were in early May less likely.

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday approved the first increase in the municipal portion of the city tax rate since 2008, a 2-cent hike that will bring it to about 62.3 cents for the 2012-2013 fiscal year that begins on July 1.

Addison Northwest Supervisory Union officials and City Manager Mel Hawley expect the city’s residential school rate to drop by a little bit less than a penny, meaning the overall residential property rate in Vergennes should rise by a little more than a penny.

Towns hear triathlon complaints

Posted on June 28, 2012 |
By Lee J. Kahrs

LEICESTER — They may have to agree to disagree.

The Leicester and Salisbury selectboards held a joint special meeting on June 14 to address concerns of a handful of residents in both towns regarding the annual Vermont Sun Triathlon series. While race organizers said some minor changes may be made to appease the residents, it all comes down to coexistence.

The triathlons, which are run on four Sunday mornings each summer, include a swimming portion in Lake Dunmore, and biking and running legs on Route 53 and other nearby roads.

What to do about the river?

Posted on June 25, 2012 |
By John Flowers

EAST MIDDLEBURY — John and Theresa Anderson bought their home off Grist Mill Road around seven years ago. Among its many assets: A backyard spacious enough for a horse ring and a border with the Middlebury River.

The river, however, has now become a mixed blessing.

A series of soaking storms — punctuated by Tropical Storm Irene last year — have at times turned the placid river into a raging juggernaut, careening against its banks and spilling into portions of the East Middlebury community.
