Local pair charged in child pornography case

MIDDLEBURY — Two former Middlebury residents on Tuesday pleaded innocent to possession of child pornography and other charges in Addison County Superior Court, criminal division, in connection with allegations involving a 9-year-old girl in incidents beginning in 2013, and concluding in 2015.

Jason H. Dukette, 37, currently of Rutland, was arraigned on charges of felony attempted lewd and lascivious conduct with a child, misdemeanor possession of child pornography, and a misdemeanor count of furnishing indecent material to a minor with a minor present.

City council reconsidering Vergennes overnight winter parking ban

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council at their Aug. 30 meeting continued to discuss amending the winter ban on overnight parking on city streets, a law that allows the city’s public works department to easily plow and sand roads during snowstorms. Some landlords and business owners have told the council it has posed problems for their tenants, clients and employees.

Foster Motors cited for excellence

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury car dealership Foster Motors recently won the inaugural Customer First Award for Excellence from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA).

FCA Service District Manager John Bishop said that the automaker has 2,600 dealerships nationally, and that Foster Motors was one of only 124 inaugural winners of this award, and the only one in Vermont.

“We have 314 dealers in the Northeast, and only 28 award recipients,” said Bishop, who works in the Burlington district. “A well-deserved award!”

$100,000 in challenge grants given in Porter Medical Center campaign

MIDDLEBURY — Two major and anonymous financial commitments totaling $100,000 have been committed to Porter Medical Center in the form of “challenge grants” intended to encourage others to support the upcoming “People for Porter” annual campaign.

Through these challenge grants, every donation made to Porter between Sept. 15 and Dec. 31 will be matched on a 2-1 basis by these donors according to Porter Vice President for Development Ron Hallman.

Emerson Barks & On Trails: Authors discuss their works

Bristol business park proposal taking shape

BRISTOL — Bristol’s quest to build a business park took a major leap forward Monday when backers of such a park unveiled their prototype to be located on a Stoney Hill parcel behind the new fire station.

For many this vision to put a business park in Bristol and bring scores of permanent jobs to town began when the town purchased the 30 acres on Stoney Hill for $1 in 1999.

Ferrisburgh board, workers at odds with town treasurer

FERRISBURGH — The work of a Ferrisburgh official has come under scrutiny and opened the question of whether the 19th century form of small town government is appropriate to Addison County’s third-largest municipality.

Ferrisburgh town workers have recently told the Ferrisburgh selectboard they are not happy with the performance of Town Treasurer Garrit Smits, alleging that Smits is working too few hours to do his job, leaving his co-workers to perform his work and subjecting the town to late fees.

Sanders fires up Middlebury crowd

MIDDLEBURY — In a 20-minute appearance at a Labor Day rally on Middlebury’s town green, Bernie Sanders whipped up the roughly 300 supportive spectators with one of the U.S. senator’s classic orations.

The Vermont Independent exhorted the crowd to become involved in the political process in order to reverse national trends in income inequality and to advocate for action on climate change, national health care, campaign finance reform and free college tuition.

Stuff the Bus drive brings school supplies to county students

ADDISON COUNTY — This year the staff at the United Way of Addison County hosted a back-to-school donation drive known as ‘Stuff the Bus!’ The donation drive was held by placing school buses and volunteers  for collecting supplies at three different locations around Addison County: Vergennes, Bristol and Middlebury.

The Community Grants program helps to fund experiences and events in the fine arts, performing arts, history and other cultural experiences to enrich the lives of people living in Monkton, New Haven, Bristol, Lincoln and Starksboro.
