Braided rug exhibit weaves history into art at Vt. Folklife Center

MIDDLEBURY — A new exhibit is on display at the Vermont Folklife Center. “Re-imagine the Braided Rug,” featuring the work of West Fairlee rug braider Delsie Hoyt, went up on Feb. 4 and will be up through April 29.

Botanical art welcomes warmer weather in Brandon

BRANDON — Artists often focus on the elegance and beauty of plants and flowers, depicting them in a spectrum from abstraction to the minute, scientific detail of botanical illustration. Through the centuries, botanical art has combined precise observation of plant life with the balance and beauty of original compositions. “Prelude to Spring: Botanical Art in Vermont,” a new and distinctly different exhibit, opens at the Compass Music and Arts Center in Brandon on Friday, Feb. 17.

Local DAR chapter honors Vietnam Veterans

VERGENNES — The Seth Warner - Rhoda Farrand Chapter of the DAR hosted a lunch for local Vietnam Veterans on Feb. 4 at Vergennes American Legion Post 14. The chapter is a partner with the Vietnam War 50th Commemoration Committee. Fifteen veterans attended this year, seven of whom were first timers.

Edgewater event nets $10K to improve Porter Medical Center

MIDDLEBURY — Nearly 100 people braved frigid temperatures on Feb. 9 to attend Porter Medical Center Auxiliary’s “An Evening for Porter” at Edgewater Gallery at the Falls. The event cleared more than $10,000 in ticket sales and local sponsorships, all of which will be dedicated to investments approved by the Auxiliary board for Porter Medical Center.

Foote to be honored in Vermont Sports Hall of Fame

COLCHESTER — Former Middlebury College women’s lacrosse and field hockey coach Missy Foote will join Olympic medalists, other successful coaches, sports pioneers, a champion boxer, a standout football player, a star hockey player, and a chronicler of Vermont’s athletic scene in the Vermont Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2017.

Former Shoreham farmer picked to fill vacated House position

SHOREHAM — Longtime Shoreham resident and former farmer Terry Norris this week replaced former Addison-Rutland House Rep. Alyson Eastman, I-Orwell. Norris, who was appointed by Gov. Phil Scott on Monday and sworn in at a Statehouse ceremony on Tuesday, now represents Shoreham, Whiting, Orwell and Benson in the Vermont House.

Eastman, who was re-elected to her second term last November, resigned from the post in late December after Scott picked her to serve as his deputy secretary of agriculture.

Donahue resigns from Middlebury selectboard

MIDDLEBURY — Citing increased professional and family responsibilities, Middlebury Selectwoman Donna Donahue confirmed on Tuesday she will resign from her post, effective March 8.

The Middlebury selectboard will now solicit interest from local residents interested in serving out the one year left on Donahue’s original, three-year term.

Three options pitched for historic Bristol firehouse: B&B? Museum? Workshop/residence?

BRISTOL — The old North Street firehouse in Bristol has been standing empty since last July, when the Bristol Fire Department moved into its station on West Street.

Now three parties are vying to bring new life to the century-old building as a machinery museum, a bed and breakfast or a private residence.

The potential purchasers of the historic village property on Monday presented their ideas to the Bristol selectboard, which quizzed each on its plans. Selectboard members postponed the final selection until their next meeting, Feb. 27.
