Vergennes Police Log: Cite cops cite three in heroin case

VERGENNES — Vergennes police with help from Vermont State Police late last week arrested two people and cited a third in a heroin case.

Following an Oct. 17 search of an apartment at 285 Main St., police on Sunday arrested Chelsea Ann Barrows, 22, of Vergennes and Mark Kevin Kennedy, 27, of Vergennes and Citrus County, Fla., and lodged both at the Chittenden County Correctional Center.

Middlebury tennis club readies for upcoming tournament

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Indoor Tennis (MIT) and Sojo Tennis this weekend will host a tennis tournament to assist a Vermont organization that supports cancer survivors and their families.

All tennis players — not just MIT members — are invited to take part in the Tennis Tournament to Benefit the Vermont Cancer Survivor Network, which will feature doubles play in a fun, three-day competition.

ALS afflicts about 30,000 in the United States; cure elusive

ADDISON COUNTY — Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes muscle weakness, paralysis, and ultimately, respiratory failure.

According to sources that include alifestoryfoundation.org and mayoclinic.com, ALS attacks certain cells in the brain and the spinal cord needed to keep muscles moving.

Anderson to present on beautiful Bhutan

BRISTOL — The Kingdom of Bhutan will be explored in this month’s program of the One World Library Project in Bristol. Kit Anderson, who teaches in the Environmental Program at the University of Vermont, will present “Bhutan: Sacred Landscapes, Buddhas and Dragons”on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Memorial Library in Bristol.

Feds detail new dairy insurance program

Montpelier, VT— This morning at Fairmont Farms in East Montpelier, Senator Patrick Leahy and Representative Peter Welch encouraged Vermont’s dairy farmers to enroll in the new Margin Protection Program (MPP) and announced a series of workshops for interested participants.

MPP is a voluntary insurance program included in the new Farm Bill that protects dairy farmers from market fluctuations in milk prices.  The program replaces the expired Milk Income Loss Contract Program (MILC).

Addison-4 hopefuls to debate Oct. 22

BRISTOL — The Addison Independent this Wednesday, Oct. 22, will sponsor a debate among the four candidates vying for the two Vermont House seats representing the Addison-4 district. The debate will begin at 7 p.m. in Bristol’s Holley Hall and is expected to wrap up by 9 p.m.

WFAD silent; search for parts continues

Serial burglar Ritchie gets 13 years to life, earful from victims at sentencing hearing

MIDDLEBURY — After hearing emotional testimony from several victims on Friday morning in Addison Superior Court’s criminal division, Judge Robert Mello approved a plea agreement that sentenced Raymond Ritchie, 38, of Addison to 13 years to life in prison on each of a long list of counts stemming from a 2012 and 2013 crime spree.
