ACTR pitches new bus route for Route 116

BRISTOL — Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) is proposing a new bus route along the Route 116 corridor that would take passengers from Bristol to Burlington, with stops in Starksboro and Hinesburg.

James Moulton, executive director of ACTR, said the new service could start as soon as April, pending funding.

“We believe it would be a good, strong route,” Moulton said on Tuesday.

FEMA registration deadline nears

ADDISON COUNTY — As those affected by Tropical Storm Irene continue to rebuild, the deadline to apply for disaster recovery assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Small Business Administration (SBA)is drawing near. FEMA is asking that individuals, town and state government agencies register their claims by next Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Champlain Bridge is open!

WEST ADDISON — A legion of dignitaries and hundreds of residents from both sides of Lake Champlain marked the much-anticipated opening of the new Champlain Bridge on Monday afternoon.

Gov. Peter Shumlin and state Rep. Diane Lanpher, D-Vergennes, were among the Vermont delegates who helped cut the ribbon on the $76 million bridge that was two years in the making. The former Champlain Bridge, build in 1929, was abruptly closed on Oct. 16, 2009, after it was deemed to be unsafe for travel.

Middlebury seeks river security

EAST MIDDLEBURY — The village of East Middlebury was evacuated, basements were swamped, bridge abutments were exposed and the critical floodwall below Grist Mill Bridge was compromised in the flooding from Tropical Storm Irene rains on Aug. 28. Fortunately, East Middlebury didn’t suffer the kind of crippling blow from Irene that Rochester, Hancock, Granville and many other towns got.

New Champlain Bridge opening set for Monday afternoon

WEST ADDISON  — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office has confirmed that the new Champlain Bridge connecting West Addison to Crown Point, N.Y., will be officially opened on Monday, Nov. 7, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2:30 p.m., on the Crown Point side.

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin and New York Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy are scheduled to be among those attending the festivities.

New MUMS roof needed; cost placed in $1M range

MIDDLEBURY — Voters in the Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) school district will likely be asked to approve a bond issue next year to help pay for re-roofing the Middlebury Union Middle School building.

The UD-3 school board has agreed to solicit bids for the work, which an architect has already estimated will cost between $634,457 and $960,608. The former figure reflects the cost of installing a new asphalt shingle roof; the latter would provide for a new metal roof.

Survey seeks public's views on Porter Hospital services

College grad's search for work emblematic of her generation

MIDDLEBURY — When Megan Nesbeth graduated from Middlebury College last spring, she didn’t know exactly what the next year would hold. Now, still living in Middlebury, she’s accepted a job with the Institute for Democratic Education in America, or IDEA, a national nonprofit that aims to transform public education. The future still isn’t totally clear, but both IDEA and Nesbeth have high hopes for the initiatives.

Driver not charged in deadly bus accident

MIDDLEBURY —Addison County State’s Attorney David R. Fenster confirmed on Friday that he will not prosecute the driver of an Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) bus that struck and fatally injured a Washington, D.C., resident in downtown Middlebury on Aug. 10.
