Locals contribute to 'Raiders' movie remake, which will be screened at Marquis

MIDDLEBURY — They’ll be rolling out the proverbial red carpet at Middlebury’s Marquis Theater this Wednesday night at 7 p.m. for the premier of a true cinematic blockbuster: “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

What’s that you say? Wasn’t that movie, starring Harrison Ford, released back in 1981? Is this an updated version with a couple of minutes of extra footage?

Nope.

St. Stephen's Church to host Celtic mass for peace

MIDDLEBURY — St. Stephen’s Church in Middlebury will offer to the community “A Celtic Mass for Peace — Songs for the Earth” as its third annual Good Friday Community Concert. The concert will take place at the church at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 25. All are invited to attend.

Bristol teen taking poetry performance to state final

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School senior Hannah Funk stepped onto the stage at the Barre Opera House this past Wednesday and recited one poem about a “flesh-eating wintry demon” and another about a Latina witch-healer. Actually, it was more than the typical classroom recitation; it was a performance in which Funk’s delivery became more and more animated as she worked her way through the pieces.

Utility truck kills flagger on Route 7 in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — A 75-year-old Wallingford man who was working as a traffic flagger on Route 7 just south of Three Mile Bridge Road was struck and killed by a utility truck on Friday morning.

Lawrence Kaminski was working for Green Mountain Flaggers Inc. when he was hit by a Eustis Cable Enterprises Ltd. truck driven by Tommy Carrier, 50, of Jericho.

UPDATE: Police identify the man who was killed.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police continue to investigate a fatal accident on Route 7 south on Friday morning in which a utility vehicle backed into a flagger and killed him.

Middlebury Police Sgt. Mike Christopher said the accident occurred in the southbound breakdown lane of Route 7, just a little south of the intersection with Three Mile Bridge Road. Christopher said the utility truck was carrying workers in the process of stringing cable for a utility company.

Stay off the ice!

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is imploring people to exercise extreme caution around frozen water bodies and not to go on the ice for any reason. After recent tragic events involving ice anglers, Vermont game wardens on Thursday were reporting that ice conditions have deteriorated to unsafe levels statewide.

Supreme Court nixes Monkton gravel pit

MONKTON — The Vermont Supreme Court called “case closed” on a proposed blasting and gravel crushing operation in Monkton that’s been in dispute since first proposed in early 2012.

The court last month ruled in favor of the town of Monkton against Allan and Michael Brisson, of Brisson Stone LLC, and reaffirmed an earlier decision by the Environment Court to deny Brisson Stone’s application.

Annual chili festival to bring Middlebury street alive this Saturday

MIDDLEBURY — This Saturday, March 12, downtown Middlebury will close its streets to welcome thousands of visitors to the eighth annual Vermont Chili Festival.

Beginning at 1 p.m., this popular event offers a festive party-like atmosphere with street performers, music, two after-parties and over 50 different kinds of chili to sample and enjoy. The entry fee to the event is $7 at the gate or $5 in advance online at vtchilifest.com. Children ages 8 and under are admitted for free.

Carpenter, Artim elected to Middlebury selectboard posts in close votes

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury on Tuesday experienced an additional flurry of election fireworks following the array of local and national electoral pyrotechnics that lit up polling places on March 1.

In a series of two 4-3 votes, Middlebury selectboard members selected Brian Carpenter as their new chairman and retained Nick Artim as their vice chairman.

Reen says listening and building relationships are his strengths

BRISTOL — Middlebury Union Middle School Principal Patrick Reen says he knew he wanted to work in education when just a youngster — that, or become a forester because of his love of hunting, fishing and being outdoors.

Teaching won out.
