Fire destroys Blue Spruce Motel on Route 7 in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Seven area fire departments responded to a Wednesday morning blaze that destroyed the Blue Spruce Motel at 2428 Route 7 South.

Middlebury Fire Chief Dave Shaw said he knew of no fatalities or injuries among those staying at what owner Sam Sharma said was at the time a fully rented motel.

Sharma said he plans to rebuild.

Fire investigators were still investigating the possible origin(s) of the blaze as the Addison Independent went to press.

Maritime Museum seeks to raise historic Revolutionary War gunboat than sunk in 1776

VERGENNES — Twenty years after researchers found the Revolutionary War gunboat Spitfire in its watery grave, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum officials are recommending that it be raised, conserved and perpetually exhibited as a cultural treasure offering a direct link to the birth of the United States.

$20K raised to help Panton farmer fight deportation

PANTON — The GoFundMe campaign in support of Juan De La Cruz, a Panton resident of Mexican birth, farm owner and father of six who is facing deportation, has met its $20,000 fundraising goal.

As reported in the June 15 issue of the Independent, the funds raised via the campaign webpage are being used to cover De La Cruz’s legal costs as he fights to stay in the country.

Optimism seen in Ferrisburgh for sale of land

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard met in executive session on Tuesday to discuss an offer to buy the town-owned, 34.91-acre parcel at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A.

According to Chairwoman Loretta Lawrence, members are optimistic about a sale of a property that the town has marketed for $375,000 since September 2010.

Shots fired in Weybridge pepper spray case

WEYBRIDGE — Two men pleaded innocent on July 7 to charges related to an alleged pepper spraying incident in Weybridge during which one of the victims allegedly fired a gun at the suspects’ vehicle, according to a Vermont State Police investigation that remains ongoing.

Whiting zoning board to hear appeal in case on local shooting range

WHITING — The Whiting Zoning Board of Adjustment this Friday evening will hold a hearing for a group of residents who have appealed the town’s determination that they violated zoning regulations by operating a gun range and commercial business on their property without the proper permits.

Nicolas Iocco, Michael and Lawrence Quesnel, and Roger and Blanche Quesnel Revocable Trust, of 299 Stickney Road, submitted the appeal. The hearing will take place on July 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the Whiting Town Hall.

Music in the air at Brandon outdoor concerts

It’s a Wednesday night in Brandon, and 150 people have gathered on the big lawn behind the Brandon Inn. Children dart and cartwheel from one grassy spot to the next, some holding bags of popcorn they picked up for free from a nearby popcorn machine.

The early-evening sun is out, birds fly overhead and the Neshobe River, high from recent-but-long-forgotten downpours, rushes past. In the lawn’s center, an Irish band called Extra Stout entertains the crowd with jigs, sing-alongs and some mean fiddling. Everyone seems to be having a very good time.
