Police investigating assault at end of college protest

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Police Department have been brought into the investigation of the violence that ended last week’s protest at Middlebury College against controversial author Charles Murray.

Middlebury College Professor Allison Stanger’s hair was pulled and neck was injured by protesters Thursday evening as she and College Vice President for Communications Bill Burger escorted Murray to a car after his appearance at McCullough Student Center. She was treated at Porter Hospital and released.

Lifelong educators honored for service to Brandon

BRANDON — The gathering at the Brandon Town Hall Monday evening may go down as the feel-good town meeting of this young century.

Not only were local residents excited to hold this year’s town meeting in the Brandon Town Hall for the first time since 1979, but they enjoyed the highlight of the evening: the homage paid to lifelong residents Jane and Bud Coolidge and their expressions of thanks.

Dubois Farm donation to expand size of Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area

ADDISON — A land donation has expanded the Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area in Addison, Vt., one of Vermont’s premiere wildlife hotspots, according to the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. The donation by Dubois Farm, Inc. of Addison will expand the property by 37 acres, to bring the property to a total of 2,895 acres.

Special ed teacher accused of fondling a minor

MIDDLEBURY — A Shoreham man on Feb. 22 pleaded innocent in Addison County Superior Court, criminal division, to a charge of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child, stemming from his alleged contact with a young boy.

The accused — Mark Zizis, 41 — has been a special education teacher at the Chittenden Central Supervisory Union for the past 11 years, and he is also a martial arts instructor at Green Mountain PPS Inti Ombak.

Voters approve first Addison Central unified school district budget

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory District (ACSD) voters overwhelmingly approved their first-ever unified, K-12 budget on Tuesday by a 1,363 to 466 margin.

The $37.2 million spending plan reflects $30,428,802 in net, local education spending for the ACSD schools serving Bridport, Cornwall, Middlebury, Ripton, Salisbury, Shoreham and Weybridge. That’s around 2.17-percent less than what was budgeted for the combined ACSD schools this year.

Bridport

BRIDPORT — Bridport residents at their town meeting Tuesday decided two contested races for their local selectboard and passed all money items on their ballot.

Tim Howlett narrowly won a three-way race for a two-year term on the selectboard. He prevailed with 83 votes, over David Bronson (79) and Michael Lawton (66). Howlett replaces Marian Walker, who did not seek re-election.

Meanwhile, challenger Matthew Lawton easily topped incumbent Jerry Forbes, 171-52, for a three-year term as selectman.
