Rory Jackson exhibit captures Vermont's fields and skies

MIDDLEBURY — Edgewater on the Green will host an opening reception this Friday, July 14, for a July exhibition of artwork that features images that will enthralling anyone who likes summer in Vermont. The show is “Above the Landscape,” the time is 5-7 p.m. at 6 Merchants Rows in Middlebury, and the focus is our bucolic landscape — and skyscape.

Spanish School to fete 100th year with events

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Spanish School is celebrating its 100th anniversary this summer with a week of music, discussions, and art exhibitions, and with special attention to the Spanish poets known as the Generation of 1927 and their direct influence on the school.

MIDDLEBURY — “The sun’ll come out – tomorrow,” sings Little Orphan Annie, the diminutive star of one of Broadway’s biggest musicals. “Annie” won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1977, has played on stages across the world in 28 languages, and comes to Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater on July 22-23 under the direction of Douglas Anderson.

Civil War soldier given his due: Solitary Salisbury grave finally put on map by two local veterans

SALISBURY — For 138 years now, the solitary, lustrous marble marker off Salisbury’s Lower Plains Road has been a source of curiosity for generations of passersby.

Who chose eternal sleep at this unlikely spot?

Those intrigued enough to stop for a closer look have been rewarded with a glimpse of the final resting place of Phineas “Riley” Rice, whose patriotism prompted him to drop his shovel on a Vermont farm and pick up a rifle that he would carry onto the blood-soaked fields of Gettysburg, Pa., in July of 1863.

City panel rejects Green Street housing development

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Development Review Board on July 3 denied a proposal for a six-unit Planned Unit Development (known as a PUD) at 186 Green St., the former home of the Fisher Flower Farm.

The DRB cited a number of shortcomings in the plan put forth by New Haven resident Scott Hardy, who had hoped to install six small, energy-efficient VerMod modular homes on the 1.85-acre parcel and eventually add a seventh unit.

Robin Scheu set to retire from county business boosting post

MIDDLEBURY — Robin Scheu has spent the past nine years promoting business growth in the area as executive director of the Addison County Economic Development Corp. (ACEDC).

Now she’s preparing to have some fun.

Scheu, 60, confirmed last week that she will be retiring from the ACEDC in December.

It’s a job she began back in November of 2008 — which was an interesting point in history to be in the business of promoting economic development, Scheu recalled.

High-tech glasses help blind woman 'see'

MIDDLEBURY — Thirty years ago, Louise Wright was told she would become blind. Four years ago, she did lose her sight completely, and began training herself to live as fully as possible in her new world of darkness.

Thanks to a unique piece of technology she recently received, the Middlebury woman is regaining some measure of independence.

Noted wildlife biologist to give black bear talk in Ripton

RIPTON — Ben Kilham, a wildlife biologist based in Lyme N.H., will be giving a slide presentation on black bears  Sunday, July 30, at 7 p.m. at the Ripton United Methodist Church. The presentation will be followed by a questions and answer period.

Kiham’s love of and devotion to black bears has enabled him to study their habits and interact with them for more than two decades. He, his wife Debra and sister Phoebe have accepted orphaned bear cubs into their home and enabled them to successfully return to the wild.

The charitable venture and other fundraising efforts of the members of Women of Wisdom, all area residents, have seen steadily increasing success in the past few years.
