Citizens urged to volunteer on 'Giving Tuesday"

ADDISON COUNTY — United Way of Addison County is joining a promotion dubbed “#GivingTuesday” that aims to inspire people to take action to improve their communities and give back to help create a better world for everyone.

On Dec. 3 — the Tuesday after Thanksgiving — #GivingTuesday will leverage social media to create a national movement dedicated to giving, just as Black Friday and Cyber Monday have been positioned to be synonymous with holiday shopping.

Ferrisbugh selectboard appoints new member

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard on Nov. 26 chose a manager of Charlotte’s Point Bay Marina to fill a vacancy on the board created by the October resignation of longtime selectman John DeVos Jr.

Steve Gutowski, 60, was the pick among a field of six candidates that selectboard Chairwoman Loretta Lawrence described as strong across the board.

“They all were great candidates, and each offered something valuable and different,” Lawrence said.

Muzzleloader and 2nd archery seasons start Saturday

VERMONT — Vermont’s hunters will get one final chance for a deer this year during the muzzleloader deer season and the second part of the archery deer season. The two seasons run at the same time — Dec. 7-15. 

A muzzleloader hunter may take one legal buck anywhere in the state. In addition, a hunter who received a muzzleloader antlerless deer permit may take one antlerless deer in the Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) designated on the permit.

Three school choruses join their voices

ADDISON COUNTY — Three local high schools have combined forces for the first time to put on a joint chorus concert of a Vivaldi masterwork.

Choruses from Mount Abraham, Vergennes and Middlebury union high schools will stage the performance on Thursday at 7:00 at the VUHS gymnasium.

“It’s really neat to combine forces, like how Vergennes and Mount Abe share a football team,” Mount Abraham choir director Megan LaRose said.

Ortuno succeeds Douglas as Shoreham town clerk

SHOREHAM — The town of Shoreham welcomes a new town clerk this week.

Incumbent Clerk Amy Douglas decided to step down, effective Nov. 29, after approximately five years of service. The selectboard has appointed resident Julie Ortuno to take Douglas’ place until the Town Meeting Day elections next March.

Douglas said she has simply decided to retire.

“I really enjoyed it,” she said of the job. “I just decided that now was the time (to retire).”

Ferrisburgh voters asked to support $850K bond for town garage

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh residents on Dec. 10 will be asked to approve an $850,000 bond to pay for the lion’s share of a proposed $1.05 million, 5,940-square-foot, six-bay highway department garage.

Balloting will be held on the same day as residents of Ferrisburgh and the other Addison Northwest Supervisory Union towns will weigh in on a proposed $2.88 million bond to pay for repairs and upgrades to Vergennes Union High School, most notably its auditorium, kitchen and cafeteria.

Raffle to spur local spending on Small Business Saturday

MIDDLEBURY — Local merchants are offering Addison County shoppers an antidote to the frenzied shopping they may encounter at big box stores on “Black Friday,” the traditional kick off to the holiday shopping season on the day after Thanksgiving.

It is a “Small Business Saturday” raffle — a promotion that seeks to draw local shoppers into Middlebury businesses on the first Saturday after Turkey Day, and, of course, through the month of December.

Frog Hollow area considered for park and ride, car charging station

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard has taken another step in making Frog Hollow a destination point by agreeing to establish an electric vehicle charging station at the municipal parking lot off Mill Street near The Storm Café.

The town will apply to the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development for up to $30,000 to create the station. A local cash or in-kind match of 25 percent will be required to leverage the state funds. Grant recipients will be announced on Jan. 27, 2014.

Take care with Thanksgiving cooking

BURLINGTON — The Vermont Department of Health is advising Vermont cooks to avoid the need for speed this Thanksgiving. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued guidelines on how to cook a turkey outside of the oven, for those who want it done faster and easier using a brine or frying method, but the risk of foodborne illness remains the same.

Selby tapped as Bristol's new downtown partnership director

BRISTOL — The Bristol Downtown Community Partnership has hired a new executive director. Kate Selby of New Haven will replace outgoing executive director Carol Wells.

Selby, who has lived in New Haven for two decades, is a native of Westchester County, N.Y. She owns a horse farm called The Equestry, and said she wanted to take on something new.
