Seven decades of carving: Padua, 90, turns wood into stunning art

MIDDLEBURY — Peter Padua hadn’t thought much about testing his artistic abilities until he was a senior in high school in New Jersey. It was 1941, the same year as the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and Padua — who enjoyed his wood shop class — thought he would try his hand at his first carving: A mountain deer, her head craned way back as if staring at the stars.

Vital Rokeby Museum building completed; key exhibit next

FERRISBURGH — After more than a decade of planning and effort and a few setbacks along the way, the 13-year-old dreams for Ferrisburgh’s Rokeby Museum to become a major Underground Railroad history site and dramatically expand its ability to handle visitors is a giant step closer to reality.

Brandon general contractor Naylor & Breen Builders recently finished a two-story, roughly $1.5 million visitor center on the Route 7 site that will go by the name the Rokeby Museum Underground Railroad Education Center.

Cousins embody the thrill and spirt of Youth Hunting Weekend

MIDDLEBURY — On the first day of the recent Youth Hunting Weekend, 11-year-old Winston Forbes and his father were in the tree stand behind their Middlebury house.

“We sat there all day,” Winston said. “It was getting late.”

Finally, around 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 3, their patience paid off.

“It came walking out,” Winston recounted. “I shot it twice and then we gutted it out. The next day, we reported it.”

VUHS board to discuss bond, budget on Tuesday evening

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board will meet in the school this Tuesday at 6 p.m. to discuss its next step after the Election Day defeat of its $6.5 million bond proposal. Addison Northwest Supervisory Union voters on Nov. 6 by 2,244-1,653 rejected a bond that would have funded repairs and major upgrades to VUHS.

According to the warning for the Nov. 20 meeting, it will be a work session that will focus on efforts to craft next year’s budget and to “revise the proposed Facilities Repairs/Improvement Bond.”

Bristol studies drug crime in Five Town area
