Earned Income Tax Credit Plan panned

MIDDLEBURY — Gov. Peter Shumlin’s proposed redirection of $17 million from the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program to help expand early child education programs drew some criticism at Monday’s Legislative Breakfast at the American Legion Post in Middlebury.

Shumlin’s proposal has come under fire from those who contend that reduction in the EITC benefit will hit low-income recipients the hardest.

Local man chops and saws his way to lumberjack crown

BRANDON — Brandon can boast great community spirit, the best water in the state, and now, the first Ironjack.

Brandon native Garrett Gregorek, son of Derek and Liz Gregorek, won the first Collegiate Ironjack World Championships last month, a test of lumberjack skills hosted by the LumberJack Feud in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

Bristol puts new police HQ on the ballot

BRISTOL — The voters of the Bristol Police Department Special Service District will be asked to consider a 6.4 percent spending increase on Town Meeting Day that will, among other things, fund moving the department’s headquarters from its current location on South Street.

County dairy farms recognized for their high-quality milk

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont farms produce some of the best dairy product in the country, but several local dairy farms are being recognized for the truly outstanding quality of their milk.

Agri-Mark Cabot recently honored Kettletop Farm in Weybridge and Cher Mi Farm in Orwell as among the top 28 farms in the 1,260-farm cooperative that stretches across New England and to central New York state in its Top Quality Award competition.

Ferrisburgh selectboard chair faces challenge for seat

FERRISBURGH — Addison County’s third-largest town has one two-person race to be decided on March 5 — and the chairwoman of the selectboard is the one facing the challenge.

After 12 years of service, longtime selectboard head Loretta Lawrence is squaring off against a two-time Democratic candidate for the Vermont House of Representatives, Arabella Holzapfel, for a three-year term.

Deputy warden's house burglarized

ADDISON — Vermont State Police are investigating the Feb. 15 burglary of a home on Jersey Street in Addison during which the culprit stole a variety of personal property, including items with the State of Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife insignia. Police said the stolen items — a Deputy F&W badge, collar brass and a tie clip —  belong to one of the victims, Deputy Warden Eugene Stearns.

The total value of the stolen property is estimated at $8,000, according to police.

WhistlePig Act 250 opinion could affect Vermont agriculture

SHOREHAM — Raj Peter Bhatka’s argument that his proposed whiskey distillery should be considered a farm operation does not hold water and therefore should be subject to Act 250 review as a commercial enterprise, according to a recent opinion issued by District 9 Environmental Commission Coordinator Jeffrey Green.

And the reason Green believes Bhatka’s argument doesn’t hold water is because the whiskey he would make will hold a lot of water.

Mary Hogan sees a proposed spending hike of 4.5%

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters on April 10 will be asked to approve a 2013-2014 Mary Hogan Elementary School budget of $6,418,788, reflecting a 4.46-percent increase in spending that would preserve current programs and beef up science, technology, engineering and math instruction.

The proposed budget does not include a second-language (Spanish) program that the ID-4 school board has been discussing for the past few years. The board elected to take a pass on such a program, at an estimated cost of $144,671, in favor of a greater focus on math and sciences.
