It’s that time of the year and my wife and I got up a bit earlier than usual Wednesday morning and headed out to the Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area in Addison to see the snow geese. While the numbers don’t rival the 10,000-plus birds the area used to attract a couple of decades ago, there are currently 2,000-plus geese in the area this week, according to recent reports, including many just feet from the viewing area when we visited.

Hounchell and dad 20150815_203253.jpg

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Joseph Hounchell has hardly had a typical introduction to the college experience. As “plebe,” or first-year, in the Brigade of Midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy, the Cornwall native is in uniform at all hours, can recite the menu of the next three meals from memory, and is working toward a career in the Navy or Marine Corps after he graduates.

It’s far from the trappings of many college freshmen, but that’s exactly what he enjoys.

MIDDLEBURY — “Even today, when I stand up at hockey games for ‘The Star Spangled Banner,’ the first thought in my mind is Charlie Lee,” said Reg Spooner.

Spooner, 78, has lived his whole life in Middlebury. His dad worked for Monument Farms. Spooner worked there some too. His high school physics teacher encouraged him to go to college and get a degree in engineering. But back in the 1950s, there was little of today’s public funding for students to pay for college. The relatively new G.I. Bill was for vets only.

NEW HAVEN — A company looking to build a massive power converter station in New Haven as part of a renewable energy project said it would not only pay an estimated $2.6 million annually in property taxes, as previously promised, but officials have added more sweeteners.

Officials representing Anbaric Transmission’s Vermont Green Line Project told the New Haven selectboard on Tuesday that they would pay the town $700,000 for 20 years. They also spoke about additional support the project would give the town.

MIDDLEBURY — JoyRyde, a new app for mobile devices created by two Middlebury College students, has tracked more than 33,000 miles of phone-free driving — and counting.

That’s a big deal, given that around 660,000 drivers “at any given daylight moment across America” are talking on cell phones or using electronic devices, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As estimated by the NHTSA, all that distracted driving leads to around 3,000 fatalities and over 400,000 injuries a year.
