Cornwall residents to vote on pipeline deal

CORNWALL — Cornwall voters on Feb. 12 will be asked if they’d like to allow the town selectboard to sign an agreement with Vermont Gas calling for the company to compensate the community for ending its opposition to its Phase II pipeline proposal.

Stone inducted into Pulling Hall of Fame

WORTHINGTON, Ohio — Middlebury businessman Gardner Stone was inducted into the National Tractor Pullers Association’s Pulling Hall of Fame last month as part of the institution’s 31st Hall induction class. Stone was welcomed into the Hall on Dec. 6 at the 44th Annual NTPA Awards Banquet hosted by the Columbus Marriott Northwest in Dublin, Ohio.

Stone was inducted along with close friend and fellow NTPA competitor David P. Schreier.

Overflows from sewer pose environmental challenge for Vergennes

VERGENNES — Late in December, the city of Vergennes, as required by the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources in such cases, reported that an estimated 467,000 gallons that its municipal sewer system could not handle had gone through an overflow pipe into Otter Creek.

Investigations clear trooper in Bristol shooting

BRISTOL — Addison County State’s Attorney David Fenster and Attorney General William H. Sorrell announced today that they have completed independent separate reviews of a police-shooting incident that occurred on Sept. 4, 2014, in Bristol.

More Bristol talks set for firehouse land buy

BRISTOL — Bristol may soon complete another step on the way to building a new home for its fire department.

Since the fall, members of the selectboard have been negotiating with the Bristol Recreation Club, a private organization, to purchase some of the club’s land on West Street as one part of a future building site for a new firehouse.

Bristol police officer commended; may have stopped suicide

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard and Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs commended a local officer for his actions that may have prevented a Colchester woman from taking her own life.

Gibbs penned a letter of commendation to Sgt. George “Randy” Crowe after his role in relaying information from a woman in Canada to Chittenden County police about a woman believed to be in danger of harming herself.

Pipeline cost hikes raise questions about Vermont Gas' ability to project expenses

ADDISON COUNTY — The Dec. 19 announcement by Vermont Gas Systems of a second multi-million-dollar price hike for Phase I of its Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project pipeline disappointed regulators and the governor and raised key questions about the company’s ability to both manage the project and rein in costs.

BRISTOL — Addison County will have an important seat at the table when the Vermont Legislature gets to work this month on education finance reform, tabbed by many lawmakers as the top priority for the 2015 session.

Vermont House Speaker Shap Smith has picked Rep. Dave Sharpe, D-Bristol, to chair the House Education Committee, a panel that will clearly play a big role in devising and advancing any bills aimed at changing the manner in which the state’s public schools are financed.

Cost balloons for Middlebury rail tunnel

MIDDLEBURY — Officials planning replacement of Middlebury’s two downtown railroad overpasses said construction is being delayed until next year after new information suggested the project could cost more than twice as much as originally forecast, and could take at least three construction seasons to complete instead of two.
