Minister launches Spanish program on MCTV

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Community Television (MCTV) viewers have for the past two decades been able to get a sampling of programming in French, through the locally produced “Chronique Francophone.”

Now the station is branching out into Spanish through a religious program offered by a pastor who has preached at Baptist churches in Starksboro, Middlebury and Huntington.

Vermont Sun adds childcare tenant

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Sun Sports and Fitness will soon provide a home base for the next generation of work-out enthusiasts. Steve Hare, co-owner of Vermont Sun, confirmed on Monday the business will soon sign a five-year lease with a new tenant, Middlebury Family Center (MFC).

The Addison Independent reported in June that Kathleen and Katey Lafayette were seeking town approval to open a new childcare center at 111 Court St. that could accommodate up to 45 children and employ up to 10 caregivers.

New ACSU leader vows progress

MIDDLEBURY — Although his tenure as Addison Central Supervisory Union superintendent will last only one year, Gail Conley doesn’t like to hear the word “interim” used before his title.

That’s because, he said, “interim” leader can conjure notions of someone satisfied with staying the course until a permanent replacement comes along. And Conley served notice last week that he will not simply be holding down the fort during his year in office.

Musician follows her dreams

ADDISON COUNTY — Helen Weston has always lived a life of music.

She grew up in Bristol playing more instruments than she has toes. Her parents Ken and Vivian Weston of Bristol and her five siblings all play a medley of instruments. She studied concert piano and music theory in college, and she taught music to local children at Starksboro’s Robinson Elementary School and Lincoln Community School.

Deadline nearing for dairying deal

VERMONT — The deadline is drawing near for some 10,000 dairy farmers in the Northeast to file compensation claims in the sweeping Dean Foods antitrust settlement, which offers $30 million in monetary damages.

A portion of that money was allocated to be divided between farmers who produced and pooled raw milk on Federal Milk Marketing Order 1 between January 2002 and May 2011.

Heffernan charged with attempted murder in shooting

BURLINGTON — The Chittenden County state’s attorney charged Dean T. Heffernan, 27, of Bristol with attempted murder, first degree, at a Thursday morning arraignment at the criminal division of Chittenden County Superior Court.

Heffernan pleaded innocent to a charge that carries a penalty ranging according to court documents from "a presumptive minimum term of 35 years" to life in prison.

Shoreham family rallies for education in D.C.

SHOREHAM — Moved by the release this spring of statistics that said 72 percent of Vermont schools — including 13 of 25 schools in Addison County and Brandon — failed to make enough government-mandated progress, several local people traveled to Washington, D.C., on July 28 to attend the Save Our Schools March and National Call to Action. The event was organized in opposition to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, known as NCLB.

HOPE plan for housing not funded

No Child law requires testing, can penalize schools

No Child Left Behind (NCLB), signed into law by President George W. Bush in January 2002, takes a standards-based approach to education, operating under the theory that high standards and measurable goals are the keys to unlocking an individual child’s potential as a student. To measure improvement, the law ties federal education funding directly to student performance on standardized tests.
