Waltham tax hike largest in ANwSU

WALTHAM — The Waltham residential property tax rate for the current fiscal year rose by 28.74 cents, or about 16 percent, the largest increase among the five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union towns.

Waltham’s selectboard set its residential and non-residential tax rates last week. Like all Vermont property tax rates, an increase in the statewide school tax rate pushed the town’s rates higher.

George joins the write-in race for assistant judge

MIDDLEBURY — There are now three write-in candidates for two side judge slots that until recently had no takers. Longtime Middlebury resident Alice George has confirmed her plans to join Mark Smith and Irene Poole in a write-in effort for the Aug. 26 primary, a necessary step for the candidates to have their names placed on the Nov. 4 General Election ballot.

Jericho couple takes over Marble Works deli

MIDDLEBURY — Noonie Deli’s “Purple’s Pleasure” and “Vermonter” sandwiches still taste and look the same, but they’re now being made under new ownership.

Late last month, the owners of the Marble Works deli, Brian and Jenny Phelps, sold the business to Jericho couple Jay Lafountain and Lauren Barland.

Vergennes youth club hits milestone, looks forward

VERGENNES — Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes Executive Director Mike Reiderer has been with the club for 14 of its 15 years and held his post for 13 years.

Reiderer has seen the club’s ups — five of its members have been named Vermont Boys & Girls Clubs’ Youths of the Year — and downs — a 2012 federal funding cut forced the club to shutter its elementary school program.

State awards ANwSU funding, cites progress

VERGENNES — After a recent meeting with Addison Northwest Supervisory Union officials, the Vermont Agency of Education has agreed, with conditions, to restore grant funding to ANwSU that has been withheld from the Vergennes-area school district because of accounting and reporting problems.

Downtown Middlebury land draws interest

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury has received unsolicited inquiries from a handful of entrepreneurs interested in developing the so-called “economic development initiative (EDI)” parcel off Bakery Lane in the downtown. Town officials are now drafting a formal request for proposals intended to yield one or more applications to transform the 1.7-acre property into a commercial-retail-office hub.

Vermont Gas to offer mediation to landowners, begin eminent domain process

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont Gas Systems announced on Tuesday that it is employing a new tactic to secure land rights necessary to construct a natural gas pipeline from Colchester to Middlebury — the company will now provide independent mediators to help landowners negotiate with the company.

“We’re going to be offering neutral mediation for those landowners who we have not been able to reach agreements with,” company spokesman Steve Wark said.
