Middlebury warned about potential scam

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury authorities on Friday were put on alert about a woman going door-to-door claiming to be raising money on behalf of the Vermont Electric Power Co. (VELCO) for the Share Heat program that provides fuel assistance for Vermonters. Steve Costello, a spokesman for Green Mountain Power, said the state utilities do not raise Share Heat money through door-to-door campaigns are urging residents to not donate in this manner. Anyone in Middlebury receiving a visit of this nature should call police at 388-3191.

Bristol gathers to grapple with drug crime

BRISTOL — A noticeable rise in armed robberies, burglaries and drug-related crimes have plagued Bristol this past year.

To identify the problems behind these crimes and find solutions, more than 100 citizens, law enforcement officials and social workers packed into the muggy basement of Bristol’s St. Ambrose Church on Tuesday evening. While police officers did not quantify the increase in local drug activity, those in attendance agreed that Bristol and Addison County have a drug problem, and it’s getting worse.

4-H kids ready animals for star turns at fair

ADDISON COUNTY — 4-H club members around the county were hard at work this week preparing for their biggest event of the year: Addison County Fair and Field Days.

During the week, the 350 4-H members in 18 clubs around the county will show their animals, compete in other events, and demonstrate their ongoing projects. In the lead-up to the next week, members were doing the final grooming and training of the animals that will soon fill the fairgrounds’ barns.

Burlington man charged with Ferrisburgh murder

FERRISBURGH — A Burlington man with ties to Ferrisburgh on Monday was officially charged with second-degree murder for taking the life of Conrad Bell, 40, of Vergennes during a confrontation at a Ferrisburgh bonfire just before midnight on July 27.

At a Monday afternoon arraignment in Rutland Superior Court, Joseph Bolduc, 25, pleaded innocent to that charge as well as a number of other charges stemming from the aftermath of an incident in which Vermont State Police allege Bolduc struck Bell with a tire iron in the neck at least twice and caused his death.

Critical farm bill stalled in house

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The 2012 federal farm bill, which determines five years of agriculture and nutrition policy, could be postponed for another year, according to U.S. House of Representatives majority leaders.

That prospect left Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., concerned by the prospect of a one-year extension of current agricultural policies and its potential effects on Vermont farmers.

“This would be very harmful to Vermont dairy farmers and others around the county,” said Welch on Tuesday.

MVAA will stop asking for town aid

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association (MVAA) has announced it will cease requesting Town Meeting Day donations from the 10 communities it serves in light of “improved business practices” and a steady increase in calls that have helped solidify the nonprofit organization’s operating budget.

Shoreham orchard owners believe time is ripe to go solar

SHOREHAM — Champlain Orchards depends on the sun to naturally ripen the more than 3 million pounds of fruit, primarily apples, that it produces each year.

Now orchard owners Bill Suhr and Andrea Scott are harnessing the sun to lower the energy costs of harvesting and processing the fruit.

Local drummer pushes for community music

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury’s Will Smith saw an opening to bring more music into the community and took it, because he believes it is important to everyone to have music in their lives.

“It brings the community together and it’s just very good, especially for a place like Middlebury that doesn’t have much live music outdoors,” he said. “It’s a very quiet town and I want to get something going here.”

Oilseed crops give farmers options

BRANDON — What’s the big deal with sunflowers and soybeans?

Plenty, according to Jon Satz of Woods Market Garden in Brandon. Satz spoke about the cultivation of oilseed plants to a group of some 20 people last Tuesday, at an event sponsored by the University of Vermont Extension System.

Satz added sunflowers to his vegetable growing rotation in 2009, then added soybeans the following year. He was curious about the potential for growing a crop that could be turned into oil for energy.
