By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Quick action by a Vergennes teenager may have saved a young child’s life on June 19.

Travis Kilburn, 19, was fishing at the Ferrisburgh Slang at about noon that day when a boy he estimated at about 6 or 7 years old slipped off a rock at the edge of a cement platform and fell into water roughly 11 feet deep next to the bridge there.

Kilburn, who has been fishing regularly for the past 10 years, reacted quickly.

BRISTOL — When John Freidin founded Vermont Bicycle Tours in the early 1970s he never imagined that 40 years later the company would grow to annually serve 5,000 travelers in 26 countries. He didn’t know of any businesses at the time that were based on bicycle touring.

A young Middlebury College professor of history, Freidin recently recalled that he was trying to escape the world of academia. On the suggestion of a colleague, he and a fellow professor took an overnight bike trip through Vermont.

Vermont vintners promote northern wines with passport

Posted on June 30, 2011 |
By Andrea Suozzo

VERMONT — Those who visit a Vermont winery before the end of the year may well find themselves compelled to visit a couple — or 20 — more.

That’s because the Vermont Grape and Wine Council two weeks ago launched its own version of the wildly popular Vermont brewery passport program. The passport promotion plots out 21 wineries and tasting rooms throughout the state, and participants who collect stickers from at least 10 will be entered in a January prize drawing.

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union officials believe that raising healthy and well-adjusted children is a challenge, and that even the most prepared parents sometimes need a little coaching.

MIDDLEBURY — Extending coverage to every last mile may be the buzzword in Vermont’s broadband Internet discussion, but at a meeting in Middlebury last Wednesday, the real question was “what’s next?”
