Porter nurses take grievances public

MIDDLEBURY — The Porter Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals (PFNHP) fired a salvo at the Porter Medical Center administration last week, in the form of a flier circulated at Middlebury town meeting alleging that recent cuts and layoffs at the local hospital are jeopardizing the quality of patient care.

Bank prevails in auction for Greg's property

MIDDLEBURY — Around a half-dozen bidders showed up at the former Greg’s Meat Market at 3 Elm St. in Middlebury this past Wednesday in hopes of acquiring it, and the adjacent Pool World property, at bargain-basement prices.

Hospice agencies go Hawaiian for contributions

MIDDLEBURY — It may still be cold outside, but scores of Addison County residents will be donning loud Polynesian shirts, sipping tropical drinks and doing the hula to Don Ho music at the Middlebury Inn this coming Saturday. That’s the date of the annual Lu’au fundraiser for Addison County’s two hospice care providers.

School budgets OK'd in unified RNeSU districts

BRANDON — Voters in the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union overwhelmingly approved budgets on Tuesday for the new Otter Valley Unified Union School District and Barstow Unified Union School District formed under the state’s Act 46 school consolidation law.

The state’s only side-by-side school district is now fully funded and among the first consolidated districts to be formed under the law, which passed last year.

Briggs launches state Senate bid

ADDISON — Peter Briggs is used to doing a lot of chores on his family’s farm in Addison, from milking to tilling.

His to-do list just got a lot longer.

Briggs, 25, confirmed this week that he will be a Republican candidate for one of the two seats in the Vermont Senate representing Addison County, Huntington and Buel’s Gore. That will mean a lot of door-to-door and public appearances throughout the spring and summer in a race that could include the two established incumbents: Democratic Sens. Claire Ayer of Addison and Chris Bray of New Haven.

Bathroom fan is suspected origin of fire at Weybridge Street home

MIDDLEBURY — Around 30 firefighters from three area departments battled a Saturday, Feb. 27, blaze at a Weybridge Street home that claimed the lives of three dogs and caused significant damage within the residence.

Middlebury Fire Chief Dave Shaw said his department was informed that smoke was coming from the home at 141 Weybridge St. at around 3:30 a.m. Firefighters from Middlebury, Weybridge and Cornwall responded to the fire, which resident Faith Lowell initially believed to have started in the chimney, according to Shaw.

VUHS plan gets nod in big turnout in ANwSU

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union voters on Tuesday gave a $10,026,000 Vergennes Union High School budget proposal a narrow victory, 1,495-1,370. The budget calls for a 2.23 percent cut from current spending.

In percentage terms, the margin translates to a 52-48 percent decision in strong turnout in the five ANwSU communities. The presidential primary and the ANwSU unification vote (the measure passed; see story) helped bring voters to polling places, which exceeded 50 percent turnout in several towns.

Two county school districts go big for mergers: ACSU and ANwSU unification approved

Two school supervisory unions this week each became among the first in the state to unifying under a single budget and a single board the elementary and high schools in their respective districts.

Residents in each of the five communities that make up Addison Northwest Supervisory Union on Tuesday approved by wide margins the plan to unify the district, that will be called the Addison Northwest Unified District.

MIDDLEBURY — All Addison County growers are invited to attend the first ever “Producers’ and Buyers’ Forum: Where Buying, Selling and Marketing Happens.” Hosted by ACORN, the forum will take place on Thursday, March 10, from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Middlebury College’s Wilson Hall in the McCullough Student Center. In addition, ACORN will host a March 15 workshop on new and updated food safety and water regulations.
