Salisbury school bus schedules announced

Salisbury Community School Bus Routes 

2013-2014 

 

SALISBURY — Salisbury Community School has announced its bus routes for the 2013-2014 school year. The times posted here are approximations, and will depend on road conditions and the number of students riding on a given day. Students should be at the bus stop 5 minutes before these posted times for the first few days.

Vergennes aldermen considering city sewer extension

VERGENNES — In addition to considering resident concerns about speeding on South Maple Street (see story in Aug. 22 edition of the Independent), Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday evening also discussed a rare extension of city sewer service outside of city limits, to the recently moved former Vergennes rail station that now rests in Ferrisburgh next to the Vermont Agency of Transportation’s Park and Ride Lot off Route 22A.

VUHS auditorium closed as school reopens

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School auditorium will be closed for what school officials said could be a few weeks following a safety inspection last week, but they also said they have a plan to fix the most pressing problems and bring the room and stage back on line as soon as possible — but probably not for a full fall theatrical production.

Chinese students visit Brandon

BRANDON — During the first two weeks of August, Otter Valley Union High School and many local host families opened their doors for 32 students and two teachers from Kunming, China. The goal of the visitors was, as head coordinator Jeff Jeskie put it, to “speak English!” The program was sponsored by Spiral International.

Benefit rocks out Vergennes Opera House

VERGENNES — The Aug. 20 Royal Southern Brotherhood benefit concert at and for the Vergennes Opera House may not have been a huge financial windfall for the Friends of the Vergennes Opera House (FVOH), but FVOH head Gerianne Smart said the event raised the city theater’s profile and should give the group a shot in the arm.

More than 200 people enjoyed a group that features Cyril Neville of the Neville Brothers and Devon Allman, son of Greg Allman of the Allman Brothers Band, Smart said. The new, bigger FVOH board considers the event a step forward.

Energy expert joins historic site board

MIDDLEBURY — The board of directors of the Middlebury Community House has announced that Jared Moats, owner of Structural Energy Corp. (SEC) of Middlebury, has joined the board.

Moats’ company has renovated and worked on historic buildings throughout Vermont for the last 15 years. In 2011, working with a match grant from Vermont Division for Historic Preservation, SEC completed the restoration of the original timber frame of the lower level at the Community House as well as other energy efficiency improvements.

Mac Parker given 55-month prison term

RUTLAND — Vermont storyteller Malcolm “Mac” Parker and his former partner, Louis J. Soteriou, are going to jail for swindling millions of dollars from investors in a movie project.

In federal court in Rutland, U.S. District Judge Christina Reiss on Wednesday sentenced Parker, 56, of Addison to 55 months in prison. On Monday in the same court, Reiss sentenced Soteriou, 56, of Middlebury, Conn., to 84 months in prison. According to the Associated Press, the two men will each pay some share of $9 million in restitution they owe to investors.

Fire destroys Nop farm equipment; animals are OK

SALISBURY — Work was returning to normal at the Nop Brothers and Sons Farm in Salisbury this week after a big fire claimed the equipment barn off Route 7 this past Friday night. The new normal, that is, in which the family and their farm workers must take hours of extra time feeding the more than 600 cows they milk each day.

No people or animals were injured in the blaze, which drew firefighters from eight area departments, but the farm lost four critical feed trucks, two skid steers and a tractor that were all used in feeding the cows.
