Police officers tell Lions about drug problem

VERGENNES — Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel and Detective Sergeant Jason Ouellette spoke at the last Vergennes Lions meeting about the problem of drugs in all of our communities.

Sgt. Ouellette described the various kinds of drugs, their appearance and the costs, in terms of both purchase price and the effects on the user and community. He said there had been over 100 arrests locally since 2011 for drug possession or sales. One alone involved between $30,000 and $40,000 worth of heroin.

Power line developer sweetens offer to Ferrisburgh

FERRISBURGH — Representatives of the companies proposing a $600 million underground power line that would run through Ferrisburgh told about 20 residents and officials on Thursday they were prepared to pay the town at least $350,000 a year for 20 years on top of an estimated $150,000 a year in local taxes the project would generate.

According to a document displayed at the evening meeting in the town office building’s community center, the companies would also “escalate that payment by a mutually agreed index.”

MIDDLEBURY — Jessie Raymond has received a lot of positive feedback for “Around the Bend,” her regular humor column that has become a Page 4 staple in the Addison Independent for the past dozen years. It’s pretty common for her to receive column kudos while standing in line at the supermarket or at social events.

But lately, her writing has been garnering loud applause from an audience that has been able to see her words play out on stage.

New store for children to open in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Book Shop on Main Street will soon spin off a second enterprise that will specialize in books, toys, games and educational gifts for babies and children.

The new store, to be officially unveiled on Nov. 28, will be called “Ollie’s Other Place” and will be based in the former home of Yak Adventures and EveryWear at 13 Washington St. It is the brainchild of Becky Dayton and Jenny Lyons, owner and sales/marketing manager, respectively, of the Vermont Book Shop.

A new campaign — spearheaded by local business leaders, performers and civic activists, together with the Bristol Recreation Department and the 5-Town Friends of the Arts — is under way, determined to persevere until the funds get raised and the job gets done.

RNeSU and union avert a strike

BRANDON — A tentative agreement has been reached between the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union and the paraeducators and bus drivers union, ending the threat of a planned strike on Nov. 16.

The agreement came Monday night after the Rutland Northeast Negotiations Committee and attorney Steve Stitzel met with the Rutland Northeast Paraeducators and Bus Drivers Association Negotiating Committee and their attorney, Sean Leach, at Otter Valley Union High School.

Two tireless local volunteers are headed west

MIDDLEBURY — Barbara and Al Stiles moved from Connecticut to Middlebury back in 1976 to enjoy a more relaxed, healthy atmosphere.

Truth is, the two have done so much volunteer work — from grooming the Long Trail to serving on municipal boards — in and around Middlebury that relaxing became an afterthought.

But advancing years and a desire to be closer to family have prompted Al, 86, and Barbara, 90, to begin a new chapter in their lives. On Monday, Nov. 16, they will leave Middlebury to move into a retirement community near Santa Cruz, Calif.

Lawson readies for hall of fame induction

MIDDLEBURY — St. Johnsbury native and former Middlebury College coach and athletic director Tom Lawson first caught the coaching bug as an athlete at St. Johnsbury Academy.

Lawson, who on Saturday night in South Burlington will be inducted into the Vermont Sports Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a coach and administrator at Middlebury and Proctor High School (see sidebar), said he figured out his career path early on.

Cornwall girl enjoys family time, success in hunting

CORNWALL — Hundreds of boys and girls across Vermont participated in the annual Youth Deer Hunting Weekend this past Saturday and Sunday, two days when deer hunting in the Green Mountain State is reserved for youngsters age 15 and younger.

Young people may take part in the hunt if they have successfully completed a hunter education course, hold a valid hunting license and youth deer tag, and are accompanied by an adult.
