Bank employees, fire department boost Bristol food shelf

BRISTOL — National Bank of Middlebury’s staff recently held a “Casual Jeans Friday” to benefit Bristol’s Have A Heart Community Food Shelf. About once a month the bank holds a “casual wear day” to benefit a nonprofit that the bank cannot make a regular financial commitment to. On these days, staff members are encouraged to give a small amount in order to dress casually.

New Haven's Winterfest set for this Saturday

NEW HAVEN — New Haven’s annual Winterfest celebration is set this year for Saturday, Dec. 14.

Festivities begin at 5 p.m. Attendees can bundle up, get some hot cocoa or coffee at the Congregational Church and come across the street to the town green for the Memorial Tree Lighting.

On the green families can decorate the tree, warm their hands by the fire barrels, sing carols and roast marshmallows and chestnuts with the community while waiting for Santa to arrive at the bandstand around 5:15 p.m. Horse-drawn sleigh rides will be offered.

Blueberry Hill ski area stops grooming, Nordic trails will still be open

GOSHEN — After 40 years of providing groomed Nordic skiing opportunities, Blueberry Hill Inn in Goshen has turned in its grooming equipment and is returning to a simpler model of providing recreation opportunities to outdoor enthusiasts. For the 2013-2014 season Blueberry Hill will provide ski and snowshoe opportunities on trails that will remain ungroomed.

Book tells family's story of running a Bridport country store

BRIDPORT — What happens when an English-born, Long Island housewife moves her family to rural Bridport, Vt., in the early 1960s to run a country store?

“The Red Brick Pantry,” a new book by Margaret (Rother) Nocca, tells the story of her and her family as they lived it in Bridport, just a few feet off  Route 22A. Proceeds from the sale of this slim volume, whimsically illustrated by the author, benefit the Bridport Historical Society.

ANwSU residents to vote Tuesday on $2.88 million VUHS building bond

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union voters on Tuesday will decide the fate of a $2.88 million bond request from Vergennes Union High School board to fund work, the major elements of which would be a new kitchen and cafeteria and upgrades to the school auditorium that would return it to full use.

UD-3 board OKs study of Creek Road site for rec center

MIDDLEBURY — The UD-3 school board on Tuesday evening unanimously agreed to keep a district-owned Creek Road parcel in play for potentially hosting a new town recreation center.

The panel came to that decision after a brief discussion about the town of Middlebury’s recreation center plan and how such a facility might benefit UD-3, which includes Middlebury Union middle and high schools.

Ferrisbugh garage vote on tap

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh residents on Tuesday will be asked not only to weigh in on a proposed $2.88 million Vergennes Union High School bond (see story, Page 1A), but also to approve an $850,000 bond to pay for most of a proposed $1.05 million, 5,940-square-foot, six-bay Ferrisburgh highway department garage.

That new highway facility, modeled after Bridport’s town garage, would be built on the same lot as the current highway garage, across Little Chicago Road from Ferrisburgh Central School.

City voters to weigh in on natural gas pipeline

VERGENNES — Vergennes residents on Tuesday will not only weigh in on a $2.88 million Vergennes Union High School bond proposal, but also face a ballot item that will ask if they support the Vergennes City Council’s endorsement of the proposed Vermont Gas Systems pipeline through Vergennes and other Addison County communities.

Aldermen in early November formally accepted a petition from resident Jeff Margolis that calls for that citywide vote on whether Vergennes residents back or oppose the council’s pipeline support.

Tenny won't file citizens' position

MIDDLEBURY — Former Middlebury selectboard Chairman John Tenny has elected not to pursue a citizens’ petition to force a Town Meeting Day vote on a new municipal building and recreation center. He cited legal advice indicating such an effort might confuse issues for local voters when they turn out at the polls next March 4.

OVUHS earns recognition as innovative school

MONTPELIER — The best practices and unique enrichment programs created at Otter Valley Union High School have earned OV an induction into the Vermont League of Innovative Schools, the Agency of Education announced this week.

OV was one of four Vermont schools recently inducted into the League, joined by Harwood Union Middle/High School, Lake Region Union High School and Twinfield Union School.
