Scott makes official his run for governor

SOUTH BURLINGTON — Lt. Gov. Phil Scott officially started the engine on his campaign for governor Tuesday, with a revved-up, well-organized kickoff that felt more like a celebration on Victory Lane for the part-time race car driver than the beginning of an almost year-long, lap-after-lap political campaign.

Middlebury grad's business is up and rolling

MIDDLEBURY — Matt George had mapped out a tentative plan for his life that included earning a bachelor’s degree in biology, then proceeding to medical school en route to becoming a physician.

But the 25-year-old’s career plans took an unanticipated detour during his four years at Middlebury College. Instead of preparing for a life of patients, stethoscopes and scalpels, George is now cruising at the helm of one of the nation’s hottest transportation services, a company called Bridj.

New hangar would serve entrepreneur

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury will soon receive an application for an approximately 14,000-square-foot hangar at the Middlebury State Airport that would house an airplane and helicopter to be used by one of the country’s most renowned entrepreneurs.

It is a project that, if permitted, would also produce a new amenity for pilots landing at the local airport: Instrument approach equipment that would facilitate safe approaches to the landing strip during inclement weather.

Cohousing group in Bristol ready for pioneering purchasers

BRISTOL — Twenty-one years ago, Jim Mendell and Peg Kamens founded the Common Ground Center, a three-season retreat and recreation center that since 2004 has been located in Starksboro. Now the husband and wife team want to take many of the center’s ideas about diversity, cooperative decision-making and community, and create a new way of living year round with a “cohousing” project in the heart of Bristol.

Kelly Brush Foundation names recipients

BURLINGTON — The Kelly Brush Foundation awarded $232,650 in grants for adaptive sports equipment, ski racing safety and strategic partnerships, Kelly Brush Foundation Executive Director Zeke Davisson has announced.

The awards were given to 75 individuals with paralysis, 15 alpine ski clubs from around the country and in support of pilot programs and partnerships to help grow the foundation’s mission and reach.

MIDDLEBURY — As a result of a claim filed by Langrock Sperry & Wool, LLP, attorneys Emily Joselson and Michele Patton, the National Federation of the Blind and Scribd, Inc. have agreed to work together to provide access and make content available by the end of 2017 in Scribd’s subscription reading service and website accessible to the blind.

MUHS chorus to sing holiday concert at Congo Church

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School Choir will perform its annual holiday choral concert on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at noon at the Middlebury Congregational Church.

Led by MUHS choral music teacher Liz LeBeau, the choir will perform some holiday songs followed by a carol sing-along with the audience. After the concert, the Deacons Committee will sponsor a reception in Fellowship Hall for the choir and the concert attendees. Church members, friends and Middlebury community members are invited to attend to attend this free event.

Squirrel causes Middlebury power outage

MIDDLEBURY — After a squirrel damaged a main power line near the Middlebury Inn, about 1,500 Green Mountain Power customers in Middlebury village and its surroundings were without electricity for four hours on Friday morning, a GMP spokesperson said.

GMP Director of Communications Kristin Carlson said company crews arrived on the scene shortly after the initial outage, a flicker at 6:42 a.m. The power went completely out at 7:39 a.m. and was restored at about 11 a.m.

North Branch School to host dinner/dance fundraiser
