Clean water law puts Vermont on a new path

On Tuesday, June 16, Gov. Peter Shumlin headed to the shores of Lake Champlain, first to Burlington and later to St. Albans, to sign H.35, a piece of legislation that he has called “the most significant clean water bill in the state’s history.”

The legislation will help unlock tens of millions of dollars of federal funds and provide $7.5 million of state funds over the next three years to clean up waters in the Lake Champlain watershed and other bodies of water across the state.

Congratulations! Three high schools host graduations

Three Addison County high schools held commencement ceremonies this past weekend. Vergennes Union High School saw 87 graduates march across the stage and receive diplomas on Friday, June 12. Then on Saturday morning, Middlebury Union High School and Mount Abraham Union High School hosted commencement activities in their respective towns.

Bicyclist struck and killed in Ferrisburgh on Wednesday

FERRISBURGH — A Charlotte man who was biking in Ferrisburgh on Wednesday evening was killed when he was struck by a car driven by a woman who was charged with drunk driving.

Kenneth Najarian, 60, was riding southbound on Greenbush Road at around 5:50 p.m. when police said he was struck from behind by a 2013 Chevrolet Cruz driven by Holly Gonyeau, 36, of Ferrisburgh. Vermont State Police report that Najarian died at the scene as a result of the injuries sustained from the crash.

Free summer lunches offered to kids and teens

ADDISON COUNTY — The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Food Service Cooperative is teaming up with a number of community organizations including Mary Johnson Child Care, Bristol Recreation, The Hub Teen Center, Lawrence Memorial Library, the Counseling Service of Addison County, Platt Memorial Library and summer recreation programs in Leicester and Bridport to provide free meals to kids in the summer. 

Free lunch will be available at drop-in sites in Bristol, Vergennes, Shoreham and Starksboro to children and teens 18 and younger, starting June 22, as follows.

Body reported in New Haven River

BRISTOL — Vermont State Police are looking into a report of what may have been a body floating in the New Haven River.

On Wednesday at around 5 p.m. a passerby reported seeing something floating in the New Haven River in the area of Bartlett Falls that appeared to look like a body. Troopers responded to the scene and immediately requested assistance from Bristol Police Department and Bristol Fire Department members.

Bridge School teacher Sharon Pinsonneault turns the page

MIDDLEBURY — “My son Matthew attended school here for three years. And he graduated from here,” said Sharon Pinsonneault in a classroom at Bridge School in Middlebury last week. “Coming here, he learned on his own schedule, and that made him feel comfortable.”

Pinsonneault, who has been teaching at Bridge School for 28 years, specializes in making the independent grade school’s pupils feel comfortable.

VUHS student receives land trust award

PANTON — Nick Jackson, a student of Vergennes Union High School, was recently recognized for his commitment to agriculture and land stewardship. Nick received the Land Steward Award from the Vermont Land Trust, a nonprofit land conservation organization that protects working landscapes from the pressures of development. In the past 38 years, the Vermont Land Trust has protected more than 568,000 acres of land in Vermont. Allen Karnatz of the Vermont Land Trust presented Jackson with the $250 award at his family’s farm on June 4.

Vergennes considers slight rise in property tax rate

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their June 9 meeting reached consensus on a 75-cent municipal tax rate, a decision that, if made final by their June 30 deadline to set the city’s 2015-2016 budget and tax rate, would mean a 2.5-cent property tax increase.

Mayor Bill Benton said discussion focused more on what would be fair to ask of residents than on specifics of the draft budget presented by City Manager Mel Hawley.

City council endorses new childcare facility

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their June 9 meeting signed a resolution in support of a Mary Johnson Children’s Center proposal for a childcare facility to serve 30 preschoolers, one that would be built on a 1.5-acre Armory Lane lot near the city’s three-year-old senior center.

Annual East Middlebury picnic celebrates the Suttons and community

EAST MIDDLEBURY — After the wind calmed on Saturday, June 6, 12 men gathered in East Middlebury to set up for the annual community picnic. Ranging in age from 10 to 60, they made short work of erecting a large tent loaned by Eric Murray. Then the tables, chairs and a food tent were added to scene.
