Food shelves need a boost; HOPE issuing a challenge

MIDDLEBURY — Coordinators of Addison County’s food shelves are soliciting more donations to ensure that local low-income residents will be fed during the summer and into the fall, when various schools, civic groups and businesses will conduct their seasonal food drives to re-stock the shelves for the winter.

New firm emerges for Middlebury hydro project

MIDDLEBURY — A private company is exploring the possibility of taking over planning and possible construction of a hydroelectric facility at Middlebury’s Otter Creek falls that would employ a new technology borrowed from an ancient Greek physicist to potentially reduce the footprint and impact of the project.

Fracking protesters at Champlain Bridge are arrested

A coalition of social and environmental activist groups on Tuesday conducted a coordinated series of separate protests against fracked natural gas across the Champlain Valley. Nine people were arrested.

In Williston, members of the activist group Rising Tide Vermont handcuffed themselves to construction equipment at 7:30 a.m. to disrupt construction of the Vermont Gas pipeline extension into Addison County. Four people were arrested.

Brandon voters back local option tax

BRANDON — On June 30, Brandon voters approved the establishment of a 1 percent local option tax on sales, meals and rooms, and alcohol, subject to the approval of the town charter, which was also approved.

The option tax measure passed by a vote of 328-132, with two ballots blank or spoiled. The charter was approved by a tally of 358-91.

Before a local option tax can be instituted in Vermont, the Legislature has to accept a change to that town’s charter. In the case of Brandon, this is actually its first charter.

Cornwall solicits public opinions on solar arrays

CORNWALL — The Cornwall selectboard will hold a special town gathering on Tuesday, Aug. 11, to get residents’ feedback on a hotly debated solar project being pitched off West Street and to weigh in on the broader topic of how the community should entertain future solar proposals.

Montreal Botanic Gardens is a destination that will please

We Vermonters are so lucky. Just three hours’ drive from Middlebury we can experience the world-renowned Montreal Botanical Gardens, a vast parkland in the heart of a major city.

From the three Cultural Gardens to numerous specialty display gardens, plus a hundred-acre arboretum (home to almost every species of tree capable of growing in Montreal’s climate), this 190-acre complex offers delightful and varied experiences for everyone. Here are some of my favorites:

Area towns receive affordable housing grants

MONTPELIER — Waltham, Ferrisburgh, Bridport and Cornwall are among the Vermont towns that will benefit from recent Vermont Housing and Conservation Board (VHCB) grants totaling $5,215,623. The monies will be used to to develop and rehabilitate 216 affordable homes, to protect 377 acres of agricultural land on three farms, to conserve 340 acres of forest land in the towns of Pownal, Shrewsbury and Mendon, and to provide permanent public access to a swimming hole in Johnson.

Language schools to celebrate 100 years

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Language Schools will celebrate a century of immersive language and culture study this year with festive and academic events from July 15–19. The renowned summer programs take place on the Middlebury campus and at Mills College in California. Celebrations will be held on both campuses. All events are free and open to the public.

Job Corps student charged with felony sex crimes

VERGENNES — A 21-year-old Northlands Job Corps student on July 2 pleaded innocent in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, to two felony counts of lewd and lascivious conduct, stemming from two recent incidents in which he allegedly grabbed and inappropriately touched two fellow students on the Job Corps campus on June 26 and on July 1.

Bristol weighs in on $3 million firehouse bond

BRISTOL — For several years Bristol has been looking for a solution to the problem posed by its deteriorating, century-old firehouse.

In an election on Tuesday, residents approved a $3.19 million bond for a new a new firehouse by a tally of 415-140.
