Artist to describe how she makes Ukranian Easter eggs

BRISTOL — Just in time for Easter, Theresa Somerset of Essex Junction will be at Art on Main in Bristol on Saturday, March 22, from noon to 2 p.m. to demonstrate a painting technique that turns simple eggs into elaborate works of art.

These painted eggs — yes, they are real — are created in keeping with an ancient Ukrainian technique called pysanka, which means “to write on.” The method is wax-resist, much like batik, used with intensely colored dyes.

VERGENNES — When building a new home it is important that it is energy-efficient and has a light carbon footprint, said builder Ken Ruddy — but not because of the awards it can win (although Ruddy’s new home in Vergennes has been honored).

“It’s simple economics,” said the founder and owner of the North Ferrisburgh design/build company Fiddlehead Construction. “It pays for itself from day one.”

Chittenden bus strike would affect some ACTR riders

MIDDLEBURY — A potential strike by Chittenden County Transportation Authority (CCTA) drivers would have an impact on the Addison County Transit Resources’ Burlington Link Express that buses riders between Middlebury and Burlington.

As of Friday afternoon, CCTA drivers are slated to go on strike as of Monday, March 17, after having rejected the latest contract offer.

Chili Fest draws 5,000 hungry visitors to downtown Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — More than 5,000 people flooded closed off Main Street in downtown Middlebury on Saturday, March 8, for the 6th Annual Vermont Chili Fest. Braving cooler than expected temperatures and a brisk wind, residents and visitors to Middlebury enjoyed a variety of chili made from local restaurateurs, businesses and organizations, music, street performers, face painting and an after-event beverage tent with live music from The Grift.

Festivalgoers sampled 35 different chilies from 31 vendors and voted for their favorites in each category. The winners were:

Vergennes residents offered chance to help plan city's future

VERGENNES — Vergennes-area residents will have a rare chance to help shape their community’s future on Tuesday, when the Vermont Council on Rural Development will host a dinner at St. Peter’s Church and nine workshops at the Bixby Library and Vergennes Opera House.

Among those who will be on hand to help with the planning will be at least 30 federal, state, business and nonprofit leaders, including the top officials in several Vermont state agencies.

Lesbian couple in Addison says the town discriminated

ADDISON — Two women have filed a lawsuit alleging the town of Addison and the selectboard chairman unfairly discriminated against them because they are lesbians.

Attorney David Bond filed the suit on March 5 on behalf of Barbara Supeno and Barbara Ernst in Addison Superior Court, though the court could not provide the documents to the public early this week because the town of Addison had not been served paperwork on the suit.

Reporter, Cornwall native dies in Uganda

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Matthew Power, a Cornwall native who went on to become a highly respected and well-regarded outdoors writer, died of an apparent heatstroke in a Ugandan jungle while on assignment for the magazine Men’s Journal.
