Learn about no-till planting and cover crops

SOUTH BURLINGTON — The 2017 No-Till and Cover Crop Symposium will take place Feb. 16 at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center in South Burlington.

In addition to talks by extension specialists and farmers from Vermont, Pennsylvania and New York, the event includes poster sessions and an exhibitor fair. It is sponsored by University of Vermont (UVM) Extension’s Champlain Valley Crop, Soil and Pasture Team in Middlebury and the Northwest Crops and Soils Program in St. Albans.

Manure application training to be offered in February and March

BURLINGTON — To comply with Act 64, Vermont’s water quality bill, all custom manure applicators must become certified in order to apply manure on farms and cropland in the state.

To help them earn their certification, University of Vermont (UVM) Extension will offer training sessions at three locations in February and March. Although free to attend, registration is required by Feb. 10. A light lunch is included.

Locals make Champlain College fall dean's list

Police looking for Middlebury man wanted on assault charges

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police are on the lookout for 46-year-old Christopher L. Ardell of Middlebury after he failed to appear at a court hearing where he was to be arraigned on several charges of assault — including assaulting a police officer.

Police said it was at around 8:35 p.m. last Wednesday, Jan. 11, that they received a call about a possible domestic disturbance at a Seymour Street apartment. Police interviewed the victim, who alleged she had been assaulted and injured by her partner — Ardell — who was still in the home.

Vergennes-area schoolboard considers 1.7 percent spending hike

VERGENNES — A $21.1 million spending plan for all four Addison Northwest School District (ANWSD) schools and the unified district’s central office was presented to the ANWSD board on Wednesday. If approved, this second draft proposal would increase spending over the current district-wide level by 1.68 percent.

It could also lead to lower residential property taxes in three of the five ANWSD communities — Addison, Ferrisburgh and Waltham, according to district officials. Panton and Vergennes would see tax rate increases.

Surge in workers' comp raises Bristol police spending

BRISTOL — Residents of the Bristol Police District will likely be asked to approve a double-digit hike in taxpayer funds used to pay for the department budget in the coming fiscal year.

Town officials cited a dramatic surge in the cost of workers’ compensation coverage as the reason for the 17 percent increase.
