ADDISON/AFGHANISTAN — Sgt. 1st Class Michael Wojciechowski left behind his wife, Elizabeth, and their three children in Addison last Jan. 8 when he joined his Vermont Army National Guard colleagues in the first stages of their deployment to Afghanistan.

Officials in the U.S. armed forces last week shared photos of Wojciechowski on duty in Afghanistan, and Elizabeth Wojciechowski reports that her husband has settled into his mission there.

“He’s doing great,” she said. “The family is doing good.”

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College students Ben Wessel and Pier LaFarge had a lot on their minds one recent afternoon. There was finding on-campus housing, choosing classes for next semester — and, of course, coordinating a statewide campaign to get the gubernatorial candidates talking about clean energy plans.

Departing city planner praised

VERGENNES — Vergennes officials said it was with unusual regret that they accepted the April 13 resignation of Neil Curtis from the city’s planning commission after almost seven years of service, the past three-and-a-half as its chairman.

Curtis, 42, oversaw the first full rewrite of the Vergennes city plan in decades, an effort that consumed most of his tenure, and also served those seven years on the Vergennes Development Review Board.

Local response rates to U.S. Census vary

By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON COUNTY — With the official deadline for U.S. residents to mail in their Census form — April 16 — passed, Addison County as of Monday stood right at the Vermont average for compliance, 65 percent.

That average also equals Vermont’s 2000 rate of mail-in participation of 65 percent, although the nation as a whole lagged the 2000 compliance number, 72-71 percent, as of Wednesday. The U.S. Census Bureau will update those figures through Friday, and the 2010 national rate could still equal that of 2000.

Mt. Abe support staff, board clash over contract

Posted on April 22, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School’s non-union support staff and members of the high school board clashed on Tuesday night over a tender subject: salary and benefit negotiations.

The conversation came after the Mount Abe board, in a rare move, decided to suspend the rules at its board meeting on Tuesday evening to openly discuss a topic normally left behind closed doors.

So far, the school board is pushing for no increase in salaries for the non-union staff, and has also indicated an interest in raising health insurance co-pays from 4 to 10 percent.

Cyclist fights MS with cross-country trek

Posted on April 22, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

STARKSBORO — Starksboro resident Katy Blue jokes that her plan to cycle across the country this summer is a “turning 40” thing.

But for Blue, who is, yes, 40, the ambitious adventure to ride alone from Vermont to Seattle is more than a mid-life whim: The cross-country trek makes good on Blue’s long-time dream to see the country, and serves as a tribute to Blue’s father, Bob Blue, who died in 2006 after a 20-year battle with multiple sclerosis, or MS.

After her father’s death, Blue found herself devastated — and angry.

MIDDLEBURY — An Addison County District Court jury this week is scheduled to decide the fate of a Goshen man accused one year ago of shooting and wounding the estranged husband of a woman with whom he had become involved.

The jury on Thursday, April 22, was set to begin hearing the case of Jeffrey H. Young, 41, of Goshen, who on April 8, 2009, was alleged to have shot a man twice — once in each foot — during a confrontation on Dutton Brook Road in Goshen.
