Vergennes

VERGENNES — A race for mayor between two-term incumbent Bill Benton and former three-term mayor Mike Daniels highlights the March 7 Town Meeting Day ballot in Vergennes.

Voting at the city’s Green Street fire station will run from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7.

The city’s annual meeting to discuss issues will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 6, at the Vergennes Opera House, preceded by a dessert-and-beverage social gathering beginning at 7 p.m.

Waltham

WALTHAM — Waltham residents at town meeting — which starts at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 6 — will decide whether to approve the town’s first 12-month fiscal-year budget, one that will run from July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2018. Town meeting will be held in Waltham Town Hall on Maple Street.

Waltham’s current budget is serving as a transition to fiscal year spending and spans 18 months, beginning on Jan. 1 2016 and running through June 30 of this year.

WEYBRIDGE — Weybridge residents at their town meeting next week will decide a contested race for their selectboard and determine whether to borrow up to $50,000 over five years toward the purchase of a new, one-ton truck.

The one race involves T. Charles Jordan and Alix O’Meara, who are competing for a two-year spot on the selectboard.

19th century feminist to visit 21st century Middlebury

Before actor, playwright and time-traveler Kate Redway decided to transform herself into the 19th century feminist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, she had never heard of the woman or her crucial role in the battle for women’s rights. But once she learned of Stanton’s enormous influence on the movement, she resolved to bring her story back to life for today’s audience. You can see the result on stage at Town Hall Theater in Middlebury, when Middlebury Actors Workshop presents her play “American Radical,” opening on March 3.

Middlebury Mountaineer moves to Main

MIDDLEBURY — It’s been a 19-year climb for Middlebury Mountaineer, but it has finally reached its desired summit of a prime retail location on Middlebury’s Main Street.

Middlebury Mountaineer co-owner Steve Atocha said on Thursday the store will soon move from its current spot at 2 Park St. to its new home at 56 Main St., recently occupied by Clementine. The new storefront will give Middlebury Mountaineer greater visibility and more walk-by traffic, Atocha said.

Big repairs loom for bridges in Bridport

BRIDPORT — Bridport now can rightfully lay claim to the nickname of “Bridgeport.”

That’s because the community is confronting repairs to no less than four of its local bridges, beginning this March with the Sunderland Bridge on Crown Point Road.

Bridport residents on Town Meeting Day will be asked to spend up to $325,000 in town surplus funds to repair the 52-foot-long Sunderland Bridge, which straddles the western branch of Dead Creek on Crown Point Road, near its intersection with Basin Harbor Road.
