Hikes in tax rates vary across ANeSU towns

BRISTOL — Property tax rates in the next fiscal year will increase in a range from less than 1 percent to 5.5 percent in the five towns of the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union (ANeSU).

The new rates will mean increases in taxes on residential properties valued at $200,000 ranging from $37 outside the Bristol police district to $304 in Starksboro.

ACTR firms up grants for new headquarters

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) officials hope to soon start drawing down an already-secured $2.85 million federal grant and move toward building a new headquarters on Creek Road, and in the meantime they’ve applied for an additional $1 million to make the facility as energy efficient as possible.

Ferrisburgh looks at real estate deals

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh selectmen on Tuesday took steps to open public discussion about the town’s possible purchase of one property and — in a move they say is related — to list for sale a town-owned 9.37-acre parcel next to the Agency of Transportation’s Route 22A commuter lot.

The potential purchase — subject to voter approval in November — is of a home and 2.01 acres next to the town office building on Route 7. The land lies south and west of the Grange Hall lot and also abuts Ferrisburgh Central School.

Bristol board mulls future of the South Street bridge

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard is considering what to do with the recently closed South Street Bridge, which the town shut down last week because of safety concerns.

At a meeting of the board Monday night, town administrator Bill Bryant outlined three options the town could adopt to reopen the span.

Career Center chief Lynn Coale nets statewide leadership award

MIDDLEBURY — It would be an understatement to say that the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center (PHCC) has been through a sea of change since Director Lynn Coale took the helm eight years ago.

During that time, the PHCC has established a new $3.7 million “North Campus” building in Middlebury’s industrial park; expanded its course offerings and enrollment; and completed the transition to self-governance from having been previously managed by the UD-3 school board.

Denecker takes on first partner

FERRISBURGH — When he was 16, Mike Capra, then a Cornwall resident and Middlebury Union High School student, went to work for Miller Chevrolet on North Main Street in Vergennes.

Among those he called boss those 29 years ago were dealership owner Howard Miller and manager Robert “Cappy” Capra — whom Mike Capra also called Dad.

N.E. Woodcraft buys NEXUS property

BRANDON — New England Woodcraft has bought the former Neo EMS (Nexus) building on Mount Pleasant in Brandon.

Jeff Thurston of New England Woodcraft confirmed the sale on July 19. According to the new deed and property transfer papers filed with the Brandon town clerk, the Forest Dale-based company bought the 33,000-square-foot building at the corner of Prospect and Cedar streets for $340,000. The 2008-2009 assessed value of the property, which includes 5.7 acres of land, was $863,000.

Ochs hopes to add farming perspective to state Senate

ORWELL — Andrea Ochs was 13 years old when she and her mom moved to Orwell from Queens, N.Y. She at first wasn’t sold on the Green Mountain State.

“I promised my father that if I ever woke up and looked out my window and didn’t think I lived in the most beautiful place, I would move on,” Ochs said.

“I still wake up every morning and thank God that I live in Addison County.”
