By Andy Kirkaldy

MIDDLEBURY — Former Vergennes Police Chief Michael Lowe’s case in Addison County District Court concluded on May 26, when Judge Cortland Corsones denied motions by Lowe’s attorney to reduce the six-month sentence the judge gave Lowe on May 5 for a felony count of obtaining prescription drugs by fraud.

Lowe, at 51 a nine-year veteran of the Vergennes Police Department, almost all of it as its chief, reported on May 12 to Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield to await transport to an out-of-state prison.

Posted on June 3, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — When Kathryn Kramer began teaching English to migrant farm laborers in Vermont, she quickly realized that everything she’d learned about English as a second language (ESL) needed to be revamped for working with Vermont’s population of Spanish-speaking farmworkers, most of whom work in the dairy industry.

Generic lessons about recent trips to the movie theater and going out to eat just didn’t make sense, Kramer realized.

Wool wholesaler closing shop

Posted on June 3, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Only six months ago, the owner of Vermont Organic Fiber Co. (VOF) had high hopes of landing grant money that he said would have allowed him to expand operations and double his seven-person work force.

But last week saw VOF President Matthew Mole instead liquidating assets from the small Seymour Street-based enterprise he founded in 2000. Mole cited the recent recession and his inability to land critical economic development grants as the main reasons for his decision to close the wholesale supplier of yarns and fabrics made with certified organic wool.

MONTPELIER — Legislators angling for an overhaul of the popular “Current Use” program, which provides tax breaks for owners of farm and forest lands, said their proposals would have trimmed costs from the state budget.

Gov. James Douglas disagreed, and he said so last week when he sent H.485 back to the Statehouse without his signature.

Bristol tries new tack on planning

Posted on May 31, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — After a tense start, Bristol residents on Wednesday night faced their neighbors, pulled out their maps, and began talking seriously about where and how gravel extraction should happen in a town still largely divided over the contentious issue.

The conversation was the second in a series of three forums designed to turn inside out the process of town planning in Bristol, marking an effort by the town’s planning commission to trade, for the time being, public hearings for round-table conversations.

City eyeing level municipal taxes

Posted on May 31, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen have taken a look at the first draft of a proposed $1.6 million 2010-2011 city budget that if adopted would not require an increase in the portion of the city tax rate that supports municipal spending.

That $1.6 million figure does not include the sewer budget, which is funded by users, or the fire department budget, which is funded by the several towns protected by the department. It does include Vergennes’ share of funding the fire department.
