GRANVILLE — If all goes according to plan, Granville will have a center that serves as a meeting space and a haven for historical research and computer access within five years.

This Memorial Day weekend, the board of directors of the Corner School Resource Center of Granville, or CSRC, will hold its second annual town-wide yard sale and barbecue at the Town Hall, in order to raise funds for the renovation of one of the town’s older one-room schoolhouses.

By Andy Kirkaldy

PANTON — A case involving Panton and the owners of the Vorsteveld Farm made its first appearance in Environmental court on May 24.

The Panton Development Review Board in February voted to pursue a case against the farm because one of its feed bunkers was built in the town’s Jersey Street right-of-way. Selectmen later voted to back the DRB in the case.

Ferrisburgh group ponders fate of Union Meeting Hall

Posted on May 27, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh selectmen met on Monday evening with other officials and members of the town’s historical society to begin talking about the future of the town-owned Union Meeting Hall, which sits on Route 7 at its intersection with Middlebrook Road.

The building is showing its age, and selectmen are wrestling with the cost of maintaining it, which is not covered by the rent paid by a church that uses it for weekly worship and other meetings.

MIDDLEBURY — On Sunday morning, 570 newly minted Middlebury College graduates threw their mortarboards into the clear blue sky.

By all accounts, the graduates, degrees in hand, were passing on into a very slow economy. They were joining the estimated 1.6 million students in the country graduating this year with a bachelor’s degree. Most of them are looking for jobs.

But signs indicate that the job market, at least in many fields, is picking up, according to Jaye Roseborough, executive director of the college’s career services.

Bristol board OKs sewer, water budgets

BRISTOL — In addition to discussing the proposed Lathrop gravel pit, Bristol selectmen at their meeting on Monday took several other actions. These included:

• Approved budgets for the town’s water and sewer districts. Rate increases for the coming year are not anticipated for either utility, and the two budgets are supported by user fees and not taxpayer dollars.

By Kathryn Flagg

LINCOLN — The Lincoln Historical Society’s latest exhibit is full of familiar names and faces: those of neighbors, brothers, fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers. For each one there are many other men and women who’ve represented Addison County in the armed forces.

Ask Norman Steadman, the curator at the historical society’s museum, and he’ll tell you that these are the faces of service, the embodiment of the sacrifices that Addison County residents have made for their families, towns and country over the decades.

New service offers crisis hotline to struggling farmers

Posted on May 24, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — First comes the milk check, smaller than expected, followed by the mounting bills that just can’t seem to be met. Emotions are running high on dairy farms throughout Vermont, where many farmers continue to earn less for their milk than it costs to produce it.

It’s with those concerns in mind that a new statewide mental health hotline is reaching out to farmers struggling to make sense of catastrophically low milk prices and the stress that accompanies prolonged economic downturns.

Middlebury public works office to bear name of Cyr

Posted on May 24, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — By all accounts, the late Sonny Cyr would respond to pretty much any call for help at any time of day during his 42-year career with the Middlebury Department of Public Works.

Cyr’s history of dedication and self-sacrifice won him a lot of friends, who mourned the man’s passing this past January at the age of 67. Now those friends, with the hearty endorsement of Middlebury officials, will pay a lasting tribute to Cyr. On Wednesday, May 26, at 3 p.m., Middlebury will officially dedicate the Sonny Cyr Public Works Facility at 1020 Route 7 South.

MIDDLEBURY — Stewards of the Middlebury Community House are trying to boost residents’ awareness of, and investment in, a downtown architectural jewel that is beginning to show signs of wear and tear after almost two centuries of battering from the elements.

Built in 1816 near the Congregational Church of Middlebury at the corner of Main and Seymour streets, the bright yellow Middlebury Community House remains one of the best examples of post-colonial, Federal-style architecture left in town.
