Middlebury Police Log: Police recover drowned swimmer

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police participated in efforts to rescue a swimmer who went under in the Otter Creek off Mill Street on June 21. Police called off the search at dark and resumed a recovery effort the next morning, when a Vermont State Police diving team recovered the body of Yadji Moussa, 55, of Middlebury.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded on June 18 to a reported car-bike collision on Case Street, resulting in injuries to the biker.

•  Received a report of a scam that resulted in a family moving into a Court Street home without the owner’s consent on June 18. The landlord told police that a Realtor arrived at the home for a showing and found a mother and her three children occupying the abode. Police said the mother had allegedly wired money to Nigeria as compensation for renting the home. The landlord gave the woman two days to vacate the home, according to police.

•  Responded to a report of a bear raiding a bird feeder at a Foote Street residence on June 18. The bear, which appeared to have an injured leg, ultimately ran back into the woods.

•  Investigated a report of a family dispute at a Court Street residence on June 18.

•  Responded to a noise complaint in the Seminary Street area on June 19.

•  Were informed of a burglary at the Addison Independent on Maple Street on June 19. Someone had pried open a door to get in.

•  Assisted a woman who had been receiving harassing text messages on June 19.

•  Were informed that a motorist had hit a mailbox on Rogers Road and left the scene on June 19.

•  Assisted the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association with a drunken female patient on June 20.

•  Received a report that a Vermont Railway train car had been broken into while sitting on tracks off MacIntyre Lane on June 20.

•  Investigated a report of a heavily clothed pedestrian walking along North Pleasant Street during very hot and humid weather on June 20. Police contacted the Counseling Service of Addison County (CSAC), who said the woman in question was apparently trying to take her own life through heat exhaustion.

•  Assisted Porter Medical Center officials with an out-of-control patient on June 20.

•  Got psychiatric and medical help for a disoriented, middle-aged man seen walking along Route 7 south attired in a green vest, pink boxer shorts and white shoes on June 21.

•  Responded to a disturbance at CSAC’s Evergreen House on Court Street on June 21.

•  Delivered two bikes to some disadvantaged children in the John Graham Court neighborhood on June 21.

•  Received complaints on June 22 from a Washington Street Extension property owner about alleged drug activity in his neighborhood.

•  Investigated several complaints during the week about people leaving pets unattended in vehicles during hot weather.

•  Assisted a local woman who had been receiving threatening phone calls and text messages on June 22.

•  Served two temporary restraining orders on a man found lying in an East Main Street resident’s driveway on June 22.

•  Took into protective custody a very drunk woman who was not wanted at a Water Street apartment on June 22. Police said they measured the woman’s blood-alcohol level at 0.234 percent. As a point of comparison, the legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent.

•  Returned a stolen bike to its rightful owner on June 23.

•  Found drug paraphernalia in two vehicles parked at Otter View Park off Weybridge Street on June 24. Police said the drivers agreed to the search, which yielded three needles, a marijuana grinder, Q-tip ends, pen tubes, screens and a pipe.

•  Served a no-trespass order on a man who was no longer wanted at a Mead Lane residence on June 25.
